Question about Ivy (the saluki stray)

Okay, how in the HELL is a beautiful, gorgeous dog like Ivy a stray? Is it that she was born on the streets instead of being born into a family household?

I just have a hard time understanding how a dog like her doesn't have a nice home to live in.

It would be unusual in this country to find a stay Saluki, but not impossible. There are usually a few homeless, rescued, or foster ones in need of permanent placement, or perhaps a few mixes in shelters. She could have been born on the streets, abandoned, run away...any number of ways she could have become, willingly or not, separated from "her" humans, and never taken in by others. I guess it wouldn't be as difficult for anthropomorphised dogs to evade eventual capture by someone. That is a funny thing about dog movies--whenever there's a group of stray dogs, they tend to fill it out with a bunch of purebreds, including some rare breeds that make you wonder how they could be homeless!

As a Saluki owner and fancier myself, I must completely agree with the "beautiful, gorgeous" assessment! ;)

Thank you for the response. :)

Yeah, that always confuses me. The strays are always well-groomed, never starved/starving, some are even rare breeds, like you said. I guess the general "aesthetic" makes them pleasing to look at.

Still though, in reality, it'd be hard to imagine Ivy not being picked up by someone.

Yes, it does make for a pretty picture, doesn't it? Much better than what the reality often looks like! ^^' The characters having essentially human intelligence might have something to do with their surprising conditions, as well as pure movie magic and artistic license. xD
It is almost impossible to imagine that NO one EVER even attempted to lure Ivy in--unless they all assumed that such an exotic dog must belong to somebody else nearby or something. Surely a lot of people would be struck by her, impressed, and WANT to take her home even if they couldn't... ;)

I just thought of something while reading the last bit of your comment. Ivy was probably missing, because of her collar. Based on her confidence and knowledge of the surrounding area, I'd say she's probably been missing a while. Either the family gave up finding her OR Ivy somehow found herself in a completely new neighborhood altogether, and just adapted.

Hmm, good point. She also wasn't very attached to her family at all, because according to her they were rather disinterested and didn't give her much time or attention. (Again, how someone could be graced by the magnificent presence of a Saluki and fail to appreciate it is beyond my realm of comprehension, but such by some unfathomable means, such things DO happen...! ;) So, I would guess that however they became separated, she wasn't in any kind of rush to get back to those people. I'd say that they she may have ditched them intentionally, but in that case she probably would have been smart enough to also find a way to get rid of her collar...therefore, maybe she wouldn't have been totally averse to the idea of returning. Or, she just figured she'd be swift and sly enough to get away from anyone trying to capture her for that purpose. And judging from her dialog with Butch and all, I too assume that she's "been a stray too long" (to quote her directly)--or for quite some time, that is.
