Did I Miss Something?

I found this whole film kind of pointless. A creepy guy goes around having gay sex while leading on this girl who's attracted to him, he becomes obsessed with another guy, has sexual encounters with cops, gets handcuffed and as a result goes nuts, dresses in rubber and kills and kidnaps people. I didn't find anything particularly deep about it, the characters were uninteresting and his whole transformation came off as totally ludicrous. It seemed to me like gay porn trying to pass itself off as art by adding shock value.

Any counterarguments?

Yes, you missed the boat. You are merely a homophobe trying to put down what is gay, good or bad. You might even be gay yourself since there are many gay homophobes.

The picture is very strange and at times drags but the whole idea of dealing with garbage and self-loathing is hardly too difficult to see through. There are some very interesting scenes, some quite daring, but Ricardo Meneses is very interesting as this obsessive man who associates himself with a dog and sets out to prove it by licking, smelling, growling, etc. It is true that there are some loose ends left hanging but this is a different type of gay story and I think the director is to be applauded. To dismiss it as pointless is absurd and reveals a strong degree of homophobia.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that someone who is so utterly incapable of rational thought or argument should find something worthwhile in this film. If the only manner in which you can react to someone making a genuine attempt at obtaining an opposing viewpoint is by making baseless, immature accusations, then you are a very sad, pathetic person and I pity you.

PS You call this a "gay film". Do you mean that, beyond the gay sex, there is some manner in which a gay audience is supposed to identify with the film? If I'm being ignorant, please excuse me, but I am not aware how, besides the fact that the lead character engages in gay sex, that this is a gay film. Instead I saw this as a film about a particular character who happened to be gay and who is no more representative of gays in general than any straight character is representative of all straights; after all the idea that a gay character is representative of gays, or that a black character is representative of all blacks, etc., is a uninformed manner of thinking.

So what, in your opinion, does O Fantasma say about gay culture or gay individuals? Surely the message isn't that gays act like dogs. I won't engage in pointlessly arguing that you are homophobic for drawing parallels between dogs and gays, and from this conclude that you are gay yourself. That is the sort of inane argument or baseless accusation and illogic you might engage in. In fact I doubt that's what you mean. But I am curious, what is there in this film that gays are supposed to identify with, thus rendering it a "gay film"? If the lead character is supposed to represent the "gay experience", how does the director make this intention clear? And why isn't the director homophobic (or, to be more generous, prejudicial)? What point does this film make besides attempting to shock the viewers with the lead characters' behaviour (i.e. his act of rape)? If all the director is doing is attempting to shock the audience, isn't it objectionable that he tries to do so with a graphic depiction of gay sexuality, as if there is something inherently shocking about it? Or is he deliberately catering to immature reactionaries like yourself? I'd like to hear your opinions on this, and this time try putting a few more of your brain cells into play.

You are looking for what I am.

Yes, you missed something in the movie, you missed something in the reply you got from the other poster, as did the other poster missed something on your first post, and this is about to turn into a war.
The thing with 'O Fantasma' is that is not a gay movie, per se, but a movie that just happened to be with gay people. It would work (or not work, depending how you see it)the same way with straight characters.
The movie is much more about D/m relationships and love. Your comment about it being porn trying to look like art actually made me laugh, because, being portuguese, I have to admit that most portuguese movies are exactely that, and believe me, I've talked about this movie with a lot of people, even gay people, that saw it just like you did.
The other poster was right about pointing out the dog, because that's the key-point of the movie. Yes, he identifies with the dog, not because gay people are dogs, but because of the love-factor. I think that dog-owners, like myself, are capable of understanding this even more than submissives, like myself: dogs are capable of unlimited love, and that's exactely what he wants. Not to find someone to love him, mind you (tht he already has), but someone he wants to love unconditional. Just like a dog loves its owner, its master.

I hope this has made things clearer, especially since I'm currently writing a paper for college about this movie. :)

Ladyblack88, I think you hit the nail on the head. I didn't get the whole master thing until you pointed out the similarity of how dogs love and how he wants to do the same. I noticed in the film, all the growls and licking and sniffing as well as his relationship with Lorde. I just brushed it off as him being weird, but now I understand better. I also didn't get why its called O Fantasma, but I guess he is a phantom now that he's on the run. All in all, I wouldn't necessarily say this is the best film ever, but its definitely good for what it was. However, I didn't like the abrupt ending, it dragged on for too long at the end, and I agree with another poster that it would probably have been better as a short film.

I think you've been trolled... Twice in fact... I haven't seen the movie, but from what I can tell from the comments, this is a gay movie... I mean what makes a person gay other than they are sexually attracted to people of the same sex?

reply

Ooooh, this sounds fun. I'm going to go post comments on threads on message boards of movies I haven't seen. What the???

The movie's softcore. But that doesn't mean it isn't also telling a story. And it might be telling the story well, on top of that. One can have 'art' that is deemed 'pornographic' by sectors of society... look at the Marquis de Sade. Or Anais Nin. Henry Miller. William Burroughs. On and on, back through history to the Songs of Solomon.

Why the hell do you have an opinion if you havent' watched the film? So is it fair to say, i don't know, finding Nemo is a movie about Sydney because Sydney is in the movie? You're being an ignoramus. Please stop with the asinine comments.

He wasn't "creepy," he just had limited social skills. Instead of sending the object of his affection flowers, he pisses on their bed. what's wrong with that??? I think it's kind of romantic... And he didn't "kill" anyone. He tied up and beat the guy for rejecting him, because he couldn't handle all the human emotions that this guy was making him feel. Perhaps you didn't pay close enough attention here. Seriously, this is a fairly intense film, and possesses a very unique style. The director needed to use a special kind of film, super-sensitive to light, to get this dark, atmospheric effect. And the main actor who plays 'Sergio' was totally convincing in his role, he really seemed to become this character. Not too bad for someone with no previous acting experience. And I don't believe his "transformation came off as ludicrous" as you say. It seemed accurate that someone living such an 'on the edge' existence like this would eventually go off the deep end. And just between you and me; this film seriously made me want to become a garbage man...

LOL Good luck with your career aspirations.

I have to agree that it was quite visually interesting and the performances were good. The rest I have to agree to disagree on. The film still seemed utterly absurd to me. The director could not even decide if the lead was into domination or submission and wound up settling upon general all-around horniness, which I think Porky's did a better job of capturing.
