The game of Survivor, the formula and dynamic = perfect

It's really quite a brilliant concept.

Two different teams that compete against each other.

They need to work together, within their tribes....but also need to start strategizing AGAINST each other, step by step....and slowly turn on each other, within their own tribes. It's like a chess game, where you have to be cognizant of your moment-to-moment moves....but also think 4-5 moves ahead. You have to keep your tribe strong and competitive, yet you also have to start eliminating the best players....within your own team!

That's why this show has endured for so long. It never gets old. The formula is perfect. Take this social experiment dynamic....put it in an exotic location....make sure there is eye candy. Perfect show.

But Jeff is the glue that holds it all together. As great as the formula is....it can't work without Jeff P. Can you picture this show hosted by, say....Mario Lopez?

I agree, this is the type of show that could go on forever. But sadly someday it will end. Unless Jeff becomes like Bob Barker and works til he is 80. The only dynamic I see that is waning is interesting people or characters. Also they seem to have run out of attractive people as well.

This season definitely has the least amount of eye candy of any season.

It seems like Jeff will keep going until he's 95 and his heart gives out during filming and that season is cancelled.

I do not watch any other reality television or game shows. They do not appeal to me in the least, but I very much enjoy Survivor. I think it is a great concept, though I think the producers are tinkering too much sometimes because they won't just rely on the contestants to provide an entertaining experience.

I also like Jeff as a host, but I won't say it "can't" work without him. I think there would be big shoes to fill, but I also think it's possible.

I like survivor because ir changes the formula.

Sort of. In general terms, you are right. If it were a formula, like you think, the game would play out the same every season and be boring and predictable.

Actually, there are many ways to win this game and that's why it has lasted for so long. You can just keep your head down and float to the end, you can form a harem and rule them with an iron fist, you can just work the social game, you can win immunity, or you can just be so darn friendly.

Just for fun... here's an interesting question:
If Jeff Probst left the show tomorrow -- who would be a good replacement as host of Survivor?

reply

Erin Andrews.
