He Deserved A Lonely Death

He spurned all his chances of redemption. He could have left with Paro but chose to run away leaving Paro and her mother to face the music. Even after such a cowardly act, Paro still pined for him but he spurned her yet again as she walked into an unhappy marriage.

Then he spurned Chandramukhi, a woman who loved him unconditionally, because he was too selfish to quit drinking and refused her help because he regretted leaving Paro (a woman he turned his back on and then assaulted leaving her with a scar).

Devdas was a worthless human being with zero redeeming qualities. He didn't deserve to die in the arms of a loved one. He deserved to die with stray dogs for company and got exactly that. I think the gate closing before the stupid Paro got to him was the best outcome for the fool that was Devdas.

You might very well be correct.

On the other hand, broken people sometimes do deserve some sympathy... and he was certainly broken.

reply

Indeed, broken people deserve sympathy. But not those who spurned chance after chance after chance of salvation due to their own stupidity and arrogance. Devdas flushed his life down the toilet over and over again. He didn't deserve any sympathy at the end. Perhaps a bit of pity though.

I guess we have different ideas of "broken-ness". For me, someone who is broken means he probably can't fix himself... at least, not without some major help. Therefore, there is no way out for him, except to end badly.

You can say he has chance after chance, but IMO, due to being broken, he is not able to follow up those chances.

You can be hard and say he brought it all upon himself. On the other hand, I think we all bring our fates upon ourselves, sometimes good, sometimes not so much. Just as I wouldn't mind a bit of sympathy when I go through a bad time, I'm willing to give someone else the same.
