most of the humor in the movie is hard to get if you are not russian. an american might see it as pretty racist and depressing.

reply

... as it is in every movie happening in America without American in lead role.

This movie makes fun of Russians just as much as it does Americans. As for the Bourne films... way to go on deliberately choosing a fictional action film to support your assumption that American movies are "fake" compared to Brat. You need to go watch Reservoir Dogs, which came out waaay before Brat existed.

Yes, Tarantino's films are perhaps good examples of recent crime fiction with notable racist dialogue spoken by characters without making any sort of statement for or against racism. In Reservoir Dogs there's a line where "Mr. Pink" is breaking up an argument by saying "You guys are supposed to be professionals, but you're acting like a pair of *beep* So Mr. Pink thinks poorly of Black criminals in terms of professionalism. That's it. He's not a racially motivated character, and nobody cries when he says the N-word. But if a Russian does it, Russophobes jump on it and say "See! Look at how racist they are!" It's hypocritical, really.

I think this movie is appropriate for American viewers just as much as Russian viewers. As an American, it was interesting to see the plot portray the big corporate American businessmen as the real bad guys for a change. The movie is very patriotic towards Russia, but it is intended to in order to create the "brotherly" notion portrayed throughout the entire film.

Americans probably don't like the way language is handled in this film. Much of the dialogue with American officials at the airport is in Russian. It's the same on Brighton Beach and with the Ukrainian gangsters. English is definitely a second language throughout. So that goes against the melting pot tradition of English as a common language. But this is probably fairly typical of immigrants in a new country, not to mention four day visitors as the Brothers are supposed to be.

Well I'm Estonian and I love this movie.

I'm a American, and I loved this movie, it shows both the good and bad of both countries(and yes there are plenty of problems with both countries), I watched this movie because I'm learning Russian and I don't get any overtly negative sentiments against Americans.

So Americans reading this, or english speakers in general, if your not afraid of watching something that doesn't have a 100 million dollar budget, this is a great film, but I suggest you watch Brat(brother), first since it's almost necessary to enjoy some of the characters and to get a few of the jokes that are connected with the first.

I agree, in fact by far the most positively portrayed character in the whole film is the American trucker.

reply

Moreover, in this movie truck driver represents typical American, the nice helping guy, not gangster or something.

I'm Australian and watched this film I had a lot of fun watching it.

I didn't see any issues with it, it seems some people are too sensitive when the gun is pointed at them perhaps? I thought it was all good, it didn't show that Russia is a holy land with some awful Russian's working against their people like the group making films of women being raped and killed. American's paid for it but Russian's did it.

I think it was a good film, I have watched a bit of Russian cinema and I think this is good. :-)

Bred and buttered American here and I loved both movies. I also LOVE lots more Russian, Danish, Swedish, Spanish, Korean, Thai, British, etc., etc. movies. Bad call to say "not recommended for Americans". Contrary to what a lot of narrow-minded (jealous), prejudiced non-Americans may think, we have just as diverse and sophisticated tastes (if not more so due to HUGE availability) as you.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!
