Does no one else find this show exhausting?

A lot of things annoy me about this show, but one of the worst is the constant quipping. If it were just Lorelei and Rory, you could conclude it was just an obnoxious family trait, but every character in this show speaks in sarcastic one-liners! It's exhausting to listen to these people, and they're all (Rory and Lorelei especially) convinced that they're amazingly clever and witty. It would have been much more effective if the writers had added the occasional humdinger, instead of writing every line like it has to out-do the one before it.

That's what I found to be the worst thing about the show. But I gave up at S2 E17 because of the myriad of other idiosyncracies that I discovered were permanent:

1) If Rory and Lorelei make one more reference to the god-like properties of coffee... Their obsession is not as endearing as they think it is. And at times they seem to assign it the powers of alcohol, like when Lorelei is stressed because she has to associate with her parents and absolutely has to have coffee in order to make it bearable.

2) Rory and Lorelei's eating habits make me gag. They live on take-out, diner food, and candy. It's really gross. And they rub it in our faces like it makes them unique and we should be impressed that they're not fat. They seem super proud of the fact that they refuse to have vegetables. In reality, they'd be fat, sluggish, vitamin deficient, acne-faced, depressed, and cavity-ridden.

3) The town is toooo perfect. It's absolutely idyllic, and totally unrealistic. Which was proven in the episode when Paris tried to find the seedy underbelly of the town and came up empty. They have nauseating picnic basket fundraisers, for goodness' sake. Not to mention that no one is poor, almost everyone is a yuppie, and they all seem to do nothing but eat, drink, and be merry. And now that I think about it, why do there never seem to be any children around? There's a whole school full of teenagers, but you rarely see any kids. Probably because kids add mayhem and the one-liners would look even less likely coming from a 5-year-old.

4) Rory has terrible taste in guys. From Dean with his stupid haircut, possessiveness, and apparent expectations of love and devotion after dating (a 16-year-old) for like 3 months, to that other loser, Jess, who I also find unattractive and whose personality is repellent. Jess is supposed to be the brooding bad boy, but he just comes across as a useless dickhead.

5) The bah-bah-bah-bah-bah musical interludes they throw in sometimes.

I found myself liking the scenes with Emily and Emily's husband (I forgot his name) best because they seemed to most closely resemble human beings.

1) There are coffee obsessed people in real life too, so while I think, for non-coffee lovers it could be annoying, but still could be realistic. I am a coffee-holic myself and love coffee in every situation, also when I am nervous or agitated.

2) This is all about metabolism. I know plenty of people you can only live of junk food and candy and still don´t gain weight, even not in their thirties these people are skinny and can eat a family pizza and tons of candy as dessert. There are those lucky people, even if you envy them and you gain weight with even just looking at a candy bar. I also have a friend you is proud of never eating vegetables and rarely eating fruit. Also we often see, that the might order foo at Luke´s, but then leaving after just having a bit or two - so one could argue that they are not eating as much as they say they do.

3) I kinda agree with you on that one. But then again, this is how people often depict small town life and why many people move to the countryside. But it is just a fictional TV show, so I give them a pass on that one.

4) Not gonna argue with that, I dislike Dean and Jess and I don´t wanna see her end up with either one of them.

5) I found myself to skip over most intro´s, because they can get annoying, but not only with GG, also other shows have annoying music in the intro. But I can live with the music they throw in during the episodes.

I like Emily and Richard as well, at least sometimes, as the show goes on, they become more annoying and less likably.

Wow, and here I thought I was harsh in expressing my opinions about Jess! Damn right and very colourfully phrased, buddy! 

The interludes are too much, but the opening song is wonderful and creates a Pavlov response in connection to the show.

I adored the Tapestry album when I was growing up. I played it all the time in high school and at college, so much so that I ruined it for myself. I don't want to hear it ever again and felt that way decades before I started bingeing GG on netflix.

I skip the theme music every time, but unfortunately I end up hearing just enough of it that the insipid lyrics remain stuck in my head for days.

Finally!! It's good to know that I'm not alone; that song makes me want to kill myself!
I was (am) a fan of CK and was really disappointed that she'd allow herself to be credited on this song. "Insipid" is spot-on; so is "lazy". I'm sure the song was written in the time it took her to go from the coffee pot to picking up the morning paper - awful!! I'm watching the show for the first time (on s.5 currently) with my daughter and she knows to mute the opening song before I come into the room.

Wow. This is one show that I never tire of hearing the opening song. Unlike when i hear the 'Friends' theme and want to immediately slit my wrists. I also often get a little misty when they come to Edward Herman in the opening montage. I hadn't watched the show in quite a few years because it had begun to get on my nerves too but when a marathon aired showing every episode last year I watched the entire series and loved every minute of it.

You've nailed everything I hate about this show and yet I still watch it. It don't know why. I'm binge watching it on Netflix as we speak. I find it oddly comforting.

I would add more:

6) Sookie seems to be a very unhygienic chef. She's always sticking her fingers in things to taste, letting people slurp off spoons and then putting them back in the food and people who don't work in the kitchen are always walking through grabbing things and picking bits off the food lying around. And her anti-vegetarian stance pissed me off.

7) Luke's weird protectivity of Rory when I don't get a vibe that he even likes her that much. It's weird. Although I don't get why he likes Loreli either. The man is an Adonis. He needs to be out in the wild!

8) The appeal of Rory. What is it? I don't get it. The line that Heath Ledger said in 10 Things I Hate About You and the beer flavoured nips seems very apt.

Good things are as you have mentioned Emily, Richard, Luke and I also like Paris. I would have been happy to have the show about her and not Rory.

Rory and Even Lorelai, somewhat, are MarySues.

Lol depressed!

I always think about this. Maybe Rory can get away with it because she's so young (only 22 by the series end), but pushing 40, Lor should have slowed down. And in the revival she will be almost 50 so watching her binge on pop tarts, burgers and donuts will be annoying.

I don't take it too seriously because the show is a light-hearted guilty pleasure. But they constantly shove it down out throats that they eat junk food and looove coffee. By season 5, we got it!

Maybe some find it exhausting. Maybe some even take the time and effort to go to a discussion board to spread the word.

I kinda do find all those one-liners exhausting, bud I don't care about coffee and eating habits.

But what I do find really annoying is constant over the top praising Rory, all the effing time! This girl is boring and plain. She is not that interesting. Paris is like 100 times much more interesting, and imo even prettier. I get that parents love their child, and grandparents need to praise her from time to time. But the whole time? And also the whole freaking town??? And like all the guys fall to their feet when they see her and hear her child-like tiny voice. Even Luke can't stop praising her. "She deserves a prince or a king"? Common! I wanted to barf. I could get it if someone occasionally mentioned how pretty and smart Rory is, but do we need to listen how perfect, extremely smart and heavenly beautiful she is all the time? Even when she messes up everyone defends her like she is an innocent child and everyone around her is so bad and spoils her.
I like the show but I find it hard to watch because of that and it gets worse with each season (I am on 5th season now, episode 8). Will someone ever tell that girl she is not that special? Will she ever be considered accountable for something she does that is NOT right?
