Motion picture

Would it possible to recompile Xenogears ep.5 into a 2 to 3 hours of motion picture? This question has been on my head for many years, and I've constantly been thinking how everything would fit into a movie context.

I *personally* think that overall it would be possible to make "Xenogears the Movie" even as successfull block buster that Star Wars is. Anyways, it *would* be really, a really hard task for any director, staff group, whatever.

Many of the events in the game would have to be completely remade again. The task would be really painfull for scenario writers like Masato Kato, even thought he *is* genious.

However the introduction movie of Xenogears is something that is already suitable for movie screen. Colussious size of Eldridge, and it's overbearing destruction is something that only misses professional SFX's.

For the bottom line: I would love to see "Xenogears the Movie" someday.

Yeah, me too...although fitting a plot as complex as this into 3 hours would be really really really hard. I guess there could be a movie centering around some of the themes....but I dunno about the whole Xenogears episode V.

Perhaps a tv-show?

I am usually against adaptations but I would definitely love to see a Xenogears movie, aswell as the entire saga (Episodes I-VI, as it was initially planned) on the big screen. I will say, though, that whoever decides to do it must have Tetsuya Takahashi and Soraya Saga working with them extinsively.

reply

I don't want to see it. The only way possible really for the SFX to be produced would be to go through Hollywood, and then they'd hack it to pieces and ruin it like they do just about everything else.

Whoever makes it could try non-Hollywood workshops for the SFX like Weta (Lord of the Rings) and ILM (Star Wars).

Well although I really really really really love Xenogears (I do), and although I really wish that Sony made a Xenogears I - IV and a Xenogears VI (Instead of Namco's Xenosaga) (Xenosaga itself is great and I liked it, but um, once again, they took my hopes and crashed it when they announced that they were stopping with Xenosaga III)... A Hollywood Xenogears Movie would not be what all of us need to fill that "hole" inside us of wanting more from Sony and Namco's Xenosaga.

I mean don't get me wrong, I WISH they'd make a movie, but it's going to turn out like any other movie. Sure it might be a blockbuster hit, sure it might be better than The Matrix - but it wouldn't fill that hole. What I mean is, it won't be memorable - we'll go see it, shrug, and when it comes out on DVD, we'll buy the DVD just so that we can keep it untouched in our Xeno collection.

Even if the all the people involved in the production of Xenogears come together and work with the director to make the movie, it just won't work. I don't know about all of you - but what really made Xenogears so... spell-binding - was the way things were played out. The philosophy, creativity, and intelligence of the plot was definitely mind-blowing - you know, totally out of the box - it made you THINK (the alter ego, the reincarnation theory, the everything, the love stories, the royalty stories, etc)! But all that is about 60 percent of why the game is so mesmorizing! The other 40 percent comes with the bonds you make with the characters through their mini-stories and mini-story scenes (You know what I mean!) as you play for hours (I mean c'mon, remember when you uncovered Bart's Omega gear underneath his castle, and when that beautiful music came on (The Treasure That Cannot Be Stolen) for the first time?). The other 40 percent also comes from the inch-wise uncovering of these plots / surprises and deeper concepts about life and the game spread over hours of gameplay that wasn't linear (jumping scenes, etc). You just can't get that last 40 percent out from 2 hours in a movie theatre.

That's just it. You can't cram all those hours of gameplay into two hours. The viewer really won't get "attached" to Fei, Elly, and Bart... (unless the director was REALLY GOOD)... I mean maybe I'm wrong, because obviously there are movies out there that you watch for less than two hours, and you get attached to the characters and somehow know everything about those characters' lives in such a short time due to ingeniously-placed cutscenes, flashbacks, etc etc. But I just don't think you can do that with Xenogears... There's too much philosphy, storyline, etc to do that in. You really need more than two hours, and that doesn't mean you need four hours either :P. You may need 10... I don't know, but all I know is, it's going to be nearly impossible.... The best bet to make this possible - would be a TV series... But uh, we all know that's not going to work because they DID try it before in Japan, and although I've never seen it, I'm guessing it failed. But yeah, the best bet would be a TV series, they should try harder this time.

Well, this has to be the longest (and heartfelt) thing I've written for A VIDEOGAME. I mean c'mon it's a videogame right? But you know what :P i'm sure that all of you will probably agree with me when I say, Xenogears was more than just a videogame... It seriously made you think - and the way everything was set, and the plot and everything - just the game stick in your mind (not to mention the really beautiful songs they used).

Would you see this kind of review for Bloody Roar 2? :P Would you see this kind of review for Joe Dirt? So Xenogears is more than a videogame and more than a movie. It's probably even more than a fictional novel - can't get that 40 percent into a book either. The best way to portray Xenogears was how it was originally portrayed, as not an ordinary videogame, but a hands-on story. If only the original makers of Xenogears didn't quit... If only Sony didn't give up... But of course they did - they're in the business of making videogames for mindless kids and teens - not making memorable works of art.

Would would make a fine anime... or even a loooooong series of books.

While not perfect, this guy is doing one hell of a job at writing out Xenogears: http://www.xgam.org/xenogears/novelization/
He's not even a quarter of the way through the story, but it may be worth the wait.

reply

you would need like 6 movies to fit just xenogears episode 5 in LOL

the whole saga episode 1-6 would take 3 lifetiems to make if they were amde good LOL

as much as i know, he quit; the last contribution was like 2 or 3 years ago.

UPDATE 2 years later: It looks like he's working on it again. Probably graduated college and has some free time.

Definitely a great anime...make it like eva, 10 hours and 26 episodes might be able to fit most of the story in, haha

reply

A movie probably not, but like a miniseries like Dune or Taken would work.

reply

I would love to see a well adapted Anime of this game, a movie not so much because so many important details would be cut off.

In any case, is practically impossible that either is gonna ever happen T_T

A three hour movie...all the stuff in this game...impossible. A book series, compiling all six episodes...now that's what this story needs.

Well there used to be a Xeongears anime... but I heard it flunked so it was discontinued.

Lol it's been so many years (like 10-12) but I still think about this game! It's truly a memorable spectacle.

Actually, I bet if the writers of the game put out a really good novel, instead of a videogame, then to this day, you would see sequels like Harry Potter or Twilight.

The problem is, they marketed it as a video game... to pre-teens and teens and young adults... only the more mature, and precocious of us would understand it's true value.

Most kids that age, when we were that young... all they (and still do) wanted was action.

I never heard of a Xenogears Anime, I remember there was an anime adaptation of Xenosaga Episode I, but it wasn't all that great, perhaps that's the one you were referring to? o_O

then my brother may have been LYING to me (as he often does), when we were younger and he told me there was a brief anime series being shown... but got poor ratings and was cancelled.

2011 and when I think back on Xenogears, I'm still awed lol :)

reply

I don't think your poor brother was lying to you, maybe he was confused with the Xenosaga Ep. 1 anime series :P
