Something I don't understand

I like this movie (even as a MU fan), but I don't get one thing. If this fictional Eric Wirrall was a MC player, then how come nobody recognizes him? Was Harry and the former MU goalie the only persons who actually remembered him? I mean he said that he scored 12 goals, including a hattrick against United. Oh, and the MU scout also recognized him.
