It's like she started the vampire craze.

The Vampire Lestat is still the greatest thing ever.

I agree to an extent. Lestat celebrates being all that it is to be a vampire and to live an undead life, but for my money the original anti-hero is Louis. He brings a more sombre reflective quiet anger to the role in the books (interview anyway).

Anne certainly injected the human element into Vampires in her books.

anne rice was the first person to give vampires a deeper existence and how one would feel about being an immoral blood sucking entity..

I think that honor would go to the writers of Dark Shadows who created Barnabas Collins, the first "tortured" vampire.

“Dean, did you service Oberon, King of the Fairies?”

But who gets the credit...

reply

I would say Anne Rice because in Dark Shadows, Barnaby is just broody, but, with Anne Rice, her characters literally pick at the world and see the beauty and sadness and torture and love in every little thin from raindrops to flowers and dust... they question the world and life and their existence. So the creators of Dark Shadows may have made the emo vampire first, but, Anne Rice would get the credit, in my opinion..

Very good yes, but hardly the greatest, considering she borrowed. All authors do though.

Pick up a copy of Carmilla and Dracula to see how she came up with the "greatest thing ever"
