How long a span of time...

does this movie take place in?

At the beginning, I'm guessing David is probably around 17 because he's in a children's home.

My question really is does this movie take place over a span of weeks, or months?

In Part 3 Jenny says she waited for him a long time.
I wonder how long...

Okay, here's my take on this, Amanda (having finally seen it.)

Part one is in the spring. We know this because the great tits are nesting, may even have chicks, and because the vixen is nursing a kit. At the beginning of part two the kit fox is still a baby, and by the end of part two it is just old enough to be returned to the wild, so therefore not much time has passed. Part four is in the fall, during the apple harvest and festival season.

The only real wild card is part three. But even though Jenny says she's been waiting for him, I'm guessing she's been waiting not that very long. It's warm enough to camp; she's out of school. I'm guessing part three takes place just a month or two after Part Two ends, in the summertime.

All in all then, the story line would comprise three seasons. The length of David's hair at the beginning of part four seems in keeping with an eight- or nine-month span of time.
