The Hole vs Tangled - who stole from whom?

Already having seen "The Hole" some time ago I watched "Tangled" yesterday and discovered parallels between the two films:

- Both of them have the same kind of a tragic love story in it where the protagonist is desperate to win the heart of another protagonist but doesn't succeed (well, in "Tangled" he does basically, but it took him very long)

- Both have kind of a triangle in realtionships in it (in "The Hole", it's Liz, Frankie and the guy Liz fancies; in "Tangled" it's the two guys and the girl - two friends and one of them is fancying the boy or the girl)

- In both movies the protagonists are trapped in a building in the forest - in "The Hole", it's - well, the hole; in "Tangled" it's this house in the forest. In both movies one of the protagonists is responsible for them being trapped and another freaks ot - however, creepy things happen.

- In both movies the innocent, good protagonist turns out to be the bad, murderous freak.

- In both movies there are two detectives being involved in the case and one usually asks the questions, the other one observes the place where all happened.

and so on and so on

I have read that both films were released in 2001. So the question is: Who stole from whom?

What do you think about all this?

reply

I promised I'd have a look, so here I am. Unfortunately, I can't make any sensible statement on the subject, I haven't seen The Hole...

Sorry.

I believe in only two things: destiny, and the beauty of the impulsive act.

reply

Oh, that's ok.
I just thought I should like make my thoughts public to see if people who saw both might agree with me.
But it really is ok. We both still love Jonny, don't we? No matter how crappy a movie script of a film in which he participated is. :-D

But Nyah - you ask the question and you are the answer... (M:I-2; Dougray Scott)

reply

LOL! Your talking rubbish, sorry but the films are totally different to each other. And Frankie don't fancy Mike in The Hole. Also Liz isn't a bad murderous freak...she didn't murder anyone. Also what does the detectives have anything to do with it?

reply

Yeah, the movies are akin ;)

i also see the simularities... like the cops and the tragic love story. and it is simular in some details... but i didn't dislike this film (i saw the hole first, great film) because of it. it reminded me just like you of it.

i don't think it's a ripoff of whoever was before the other, if it was that one was inspired by the other, i really think it was inspiration not stealing.

The Hole is actually based on a book of the same title. So I doubt there was any "stealing", from that side anyway. I'm not sure about Tangled. Liked 'em both okay, though

So many films are like this. It's like the evil Dawson And Pacey lol

I don't think either of them stole from each other. One was a UK film and one was a US film.

reply

I haven't seen the Hole, but it is based directly on a Japanese film, which obviously came out before either of these films. It wouldn't surprise me if the "creators" involved with Tangled borrowed from or were inspired by the original Hole.

I'm sorry, But I think the movies are absolutely nothing alike. When I watch one of them I never think of the other.
