How did David get the scratches?

Unless I missed something, that part is never shown. When we see him shoot Alan, he has no scratches. Why is it that he has scratches later on?

Aftet he leaves the house he stumbles into the road and gets hit by a car. Happens in the first few minutes of the movie.
