Cephalonia...what a waste of space!

Cepholonia is maybe the worst island in Greece!I have been there recently and I must say that it had nothing beautiful apart from Fiskardo village and Myrtos beach! And the people were extremely rude!Definitely not worth a visit! What surprises me is where the producers of the movie found a decent place to film! What a dump!!!

Interesting.

I personally love Cephalonia and visited on 3 seperate occasions in 2001 (for a total of 8 weeks) and then again in 2002 for two weeks.
I found the people extremely friendly, the island very beautiful and the history fascinating.
I very much hope to go back there in 2008 although it's harder now that I live in NZ as the cost of flights is prohibitive.
The movie was filmed at Sami, where they reconstructed old Argostoli.

First poster is greek, that figures!

At some (many?) popular tourist destinations, it is not uncommon for the locals to be very polite (to the point of being servile) to foreigners and much less so towards greek tourists.

As for the beauty part, being greek myself, i find that the natural part of the country can be spectacular (though rugged, or even arid at times, depending where you're at), but the way it has been treated (and still is) by my fellow countrypeople defies logic... Greek manners are another story.

Peace.

I thought they could have made more use of the islands beauty.
Although Skiathos is nicer I thought Kefalonia was greener and came across well in the film.
They still have earthquakes there now, two or three times a week.

Kefalonia (as spelt in England) is one of the finest places I have ever had the pleasure of visiting!
As such I have been 6 times since 2001 and it only gets better and holds some very special memories for me...

Fiskardo is beautiful, The Mellisani Lake and Dragatori Caves are breathtaking and the Seas crystal clear... and Myrtos, (although with its dangerous under currents) is a beach most countries dream of owning!
The locals hospitable and VERY friendly.
The laid back atmosphere is welcoming and the food and drink is superb...

I saw Captain Corelli AFTER my 3rd trip there and AFTER reading the book whilst on holiday there under the sun in Skala!

Ignore the original post, this tiny island in the Ionian is gorgeous... Just dont worry about the airport runway ending in the sea!!

Totally agree with glynlewins here, kefalonia is an absolutely wonderful island, and I found the locals to be lovely. Sure it helps if you apprecaite the culture - like visiting places other than the most touristy beach on the whole island - but hey, that's just a thought.

I just left Kefalonia two days ago, and I have to say I enjoyed it more before this film was made.

It's still very beautiful, but there are many new villas everywhere, and I think this detracts from the look.

I agree with eleas that you have to go beyond visiting the most touristy beaches. There are some really nice ones in the southern parts of the island.

I could get angry at you and flame you, but it really wouldn't be worth my time. I'm sorry you had a bad experience but I assure you, Kefalonia is a beautiful island with a lot of soul. My family is from this island and I spent many happy summers there as a child. Anyone reading this post, don't listen to him. Sure, there are a ton of tourist traps as a result of this movie and other factors, but that happens everywhere. I advise you to keep ignorant posts to yourself in the future.

kefalonia is one of the most beautiful greek islands with very friendly people.
it's a island that combine the high mountains with the sea. a few islands in the world with the area of kefalonia has this privilege.

Me and my gf watched this movie last night and liked it. We felt the need to see it after we read it was filmed there, as we also reserved our vacation in August. From the pictures and movies we've seen it is a beautiful island. Last year we went to Thassos and we also enjoyed our time there.

I am not sure why you have come to this conclusion as I have been to the island many many times and have found it one of the most beautiful in the whole of Greece and can only think you have made this comment just to annoy people! This is not very clever of you is it? I am intending to go again this year (2013) and am very pleased to know that I will not encounter your good self there. There is a God after all!

Kefalonia it's one of the most beautiful mediterranean islands. Truly unspoiled from tourist masses even after of the filming of captains corelli.
