I mean, why did he have to eventually find a job? It was really necessary?

well he found a job but his life is still (sort of) pointless. it's a tongue-in-cheek ending that mimics a real coming-of-age ending.

that's not what politically correct means, mate. keep trying.

unfortunately - the book was not but the film is.
