Victoria Abril: stimulating for all sexes and orientations?

I can't put my finger on why I enjoyed this film so much, but I just did :-) I saw it on BBC4 on BBC2 one night a few months ago and was just intrigued. Bought the film and I can honestly say that I can watch this film over and over again. I think it's just the pure hedonism of it, an escape of some kind. Victoria Abril is fantastic in it, got to say I find her quite attractive, which is strange considering I'm gay. I dunno, I suppose I'm just throwing this out there to start up a discussion and to get other people opinions as not many people I know have heard of it.

Well, i know why i liked this movie. First, the humor is mostly driven out of situations where people are plain honest & direct. I like that ingredient for i like people are honest and when that results in (emotional) reactions, wether angry or funnt, thats fine w/me. A lot of humor is drawn out of the main character who acts like a feelingless jerk. He's not though and if you look futher into it you'll understand him better. The main character also reminds me about me, although i was a lot younger than him when i experienced similar situations. I was an a-social nerd, too. Just like in this movie, things went better.

All the characters, especially Hilmir Snær Guðnason (Hlynur), Victoria Abril (Lola) and Þrúður Vilhjálmsdóttir (Hófí), were very convincing. Hanna María Karlsdóttir (Berglind, Hlynur) a bit lacking but thats probably because she acts in a different style than the other main characters play (just like her family and Hófí's family who only have a minor role), but it does fit in the movie. Þrúður Vilhjálmsdóttir (Hófí) doesn't look bad btw!

In the comments, someone mentions 'everyone in Iceland uses drugs' and other generalisations and says 'Cold Fever' was better. This movie is not some kind of commercial for Iceland like 'Cold Fever' is. Rather, its a plain commedy, with a few morals and messages, a few drama elements as well as typical 'liberal' events (in depth sex life, (half) naked people, drugs, gay marriage. I can understand conservatives wouldn't like these ingredients and would prefer 'Cold Fever' but they're really different movies with a different purpose. 'Cold Fever' has nothing to think futher about and doesn't contain the 'liberal' elements. I must say though that my image of Iceland is certainly not that they're some kind of drug-abusing country. Think about it, did you saw Hlynur/Berglind's or Hófí's family on drugs? I did not.

The movie was broadcasted on Dutch televion (Nederland 3) but i already saw it earlier on the same net about a year ago or so. This time i watched it with the family though and even my parents have enjoyed it (although i had to say what was said in Icelandic because my father sees less than 2%).

What, someone said that everyone in Iceland use drugs? O_o

well....some people are just stubit... We don't all use drugs!

anyway... I liked this film =) I'm not sure why... maby just because i think Hilmir is handsome :Þ

I'm sorry... I'm not good in english... =/

To be honest i dont think Victoria Abril is at all sexy, let alone a beauty! She has a body like a man though...
i really enjoyed this film and i agree with fjolam Hilmir is good looking.

reply

True but I wished the flick would be remade to have a Icelandic actress.

Well, it's probably because in the book 'Lola' is actually 'Lolla', and is a blonde, Icelandic woman, not Spanish in any way. I personally don't care because she did a good job, and, well, the movie's good with that minor discrepancy.

reply

She has a body like a man? Pardon me, and perhaps I have to watch the movie first, but are you retarded? Take a look at Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! Victoria does not have a 'body like a man'. She has self-confidence, I will give you that, but if that it to be the sole province of the male gender then get me the hell off this deranged planet.

Imho, Hlynur is kind of gorgeous, Lola is kind of blah....

reply

Hlynur is so the male me! Its almost scary how similar we are. And i loved this movie, its one of my favorits! :)

Victoria is so divine.. you got to watch her singing Bossa Nova and Jazz on "Bendito Infierno" (Don't Tempt Me).

How can they be inbread as there was no incest going on as he did not sleep with a blood relative

reply

She has an incredible body, especially her butt

reply

A very feminine figure, doesn't look like a man's body at all. Her face is very unique, not perfect like most actresses, but she is still very beautiful.

"Some countries are like that. Everybody is related. Inbreeding must be a problem, but it hasn't affected their sense of humour. Now I know why everyone leaves Iceland. It is a lot like Wales or Yorkshire. Bleak and dreary."

what the hell are you talking about, iceland doesn't have inbreeding, america does though, "we want our thumbs!"

It's easy to see why a gay man (the OP) would be attracted to Victoria Abril. She is a very very sexy and alluring actress. I'm from the UK too and we should get to see more of her in the wider world but then I like that I'm alone among my friends in having a quiet passion for unknown (to them) movies and actors/actresses. I'm a big fan of European cinema and spanish in particular as I have Spanish grandparents- maternal side.
I've always liked Ms Abril ever since I saw her in Los Jinetes Del Alba (here in the UK televised as Riders of The Dawn on Channel 4 in the 1990s)when I was a teenager. She's got such a beautiful, expressive face and is very good actress.
