Old soldier?

I've seen this mini-series twice now, but I still can't figure out the referrence by Harry to the old soldier. Does anyone out there have a clue who or what was Harry talking about?

In the novel (by Sheridan Le Fanu, 1869), The Old Soldier is a nickname for Charles' former lover.
Many viewers have made the same mistake.

OK, and why would a woman get a nickname like "the old soldier"?

I donĀ“t think even the script writter has a clue. I love these kind of movies but this one is so, SO BAD.
