Sonic characters vs Mario characters

Hi guys, I have been readin lots of VS posts lately for example X-men vs Justice League and Darth Vader vs Superman lol and most are very amusing.
Yes Mario and Sonic and their friends are competing in the olympics but what we all really want is them to FIGHT! So if all the characters from the Sonic and Mario series got together in a fight who do you think would win. Just a couple of notes.
1) You can put any Mario characters against any Sonic characters from the games only
2) Dont just put Shadow kills everyone in 5 seconds, explain how the characters would defeat others or how certain characters may been evenly matched.
3) Do not vote characters just because you like them the best, vote on who would actually win 1 to 1 in a fight.

Besides a fight between the characters, they should also team up to deal with their respectable enemies who could be responsible for making the Sonic and Mario characters fight in the first place.

Aww c'mon. This guy said everything good about sonic and tails while completely ignoring all marios abilities. Very biased.

Throws fire as a range attack (sonic has no range attack?).
Can fly out the way of sonic as both raccoon and caped mario.
Can become invincible and kill anything he touches.
Has an enormous hammer.
And can often swim underwater for a lot longer (forever) than sonic.

Well I don't want to sound biased either, but I think all the Sonic characters would win hangs down. Sonic has speed, jumping abilities, spindash, and he has the power to turn into Super Sonic, as well as many different shield powerups and running shoes. Tails has the ability to fly, as well as spindash. Knuckles has the power to glide and break things apart with his knuckles. He can also spindash. I guess the only area where the Mario characters have a leg up is with Bowser vs. Robotnik. If you take away all Robotniks machines, he's just human (sort of). And bowser is a huge freakin dragonesque creature who breathes fire. So, there it is.

If you want to see Sonic and Mario compete against eachother, go buy "Mario and Sonic at the Olympics" and "Super Smash Brothers Brawl" for the Wii

If Sonic and Mario had a straight-up fight (which means no power-ups, and being restricted to abilities from the video games), Sonic would kick Mario's butt.

It's hard with Mario because his (and his friends') powers vary depending on the game and era, whereas Sonic and co's powers generally tend to stay pretty consistent.
