Was Peter Asher the model for Austin Powers?

I just watched "Pop Gear" , and it hit that Peter Asher (of Peter & Gordon)
must have been the model for the Austin Powers charcter.

Check it out for yourself.
Look for pictures of Asher circa 1964-66.

This statement appears in the Wikipedia entry for Peter Asher:

"Actor Mike Myers has said his Austin Powers character was patterned after Asher's appearance."

I just watched 'Pop Gear' and it was surreal moment seeing 'Austin Powers' in a movie made in 1964. I figured Myers MUST have used that guy for a model. The resemblance is amazing.
Either that, or time travel is indeed possible. Baby.

I thought Austin Powers was based on Cliff Richard in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Believe it or not, Peter Asher cut quite the figure in those days. He was brother of Jane Asher, Paul's longtime girlfriend, and was a mainstay of the Mod scene. Of course, he later relocated to Los Angeles, where he became a founding producer of the California Sound, particularly as Linda Ronstadt's producer.
