Other films with bleak endings (spoilers)

I saw this on TV many years ago and just rewatched it on Amazon Prime. I really enjoyed it second time around and in a way it's a nice change to see a film which doesn't follow the formula of good guy catches bad guy and lives happily ever after.

I see some debate here about the ending but I think it was clearly Oliver. Jerry's descent is more subtle and for a while it seemed he was getting on with life but then the swing, the red dress made it clear he couldn't let this go.

The end is heartbreaking as he seems to snap in the forest, loses any chance of family life, his ex colleagues have lost all respect for him and his business goes to hell.

Are there any other recommended films with such hopeless endings?
