The killer was in FIVE SCENES---

The killer appears in 5 scenes. In one scene you can see his face FULL ON and Nicholson even glances his way. Can you name all 5 scenes? And, no, he's not in the parade scene.

reply

I forgot, which scene do we see his face full on?

reply

you know... that one scene

reply

It's the scene where Jerry walks into the candy store and asks the woman where the dead girl's Grandmother lives. The killer is the gray-haired man in the back, reading a newspaper.

Just as Jerry opens the door there is a quick cut to the killer-who turns to look at Jerry, then the camera pans right-to the woman. His face is shown for less than a second.

There is another scene which shows the killer: in the retail store picking out some clothes with his back to the camera while Jerry watches Chrissy as she chooses a red dress.

Ok thanks alot.

reply

aaatjn, hi, what are the other 3 scenes showing the killer??

reply

1) the candy store
2) the clothing store
3) stopping his car at the swing set to talk to chrissy
4) driving to the park to meet chrissy
5) he was the dead guy in the burned car

Some people don't believe he was the killer, but the question is--if he wasn't the killer then why would the director include him in so many scenes without revealing his identity?

reply

Wait, so the preacher was not the killer, but the porcupine guy was, right? Why did I think they were the same person?? I think I need to watch this movie again. I did enjoy it though, very interesting.

Gary Jackson the preacher was a red herring.

He was *not* the killer.

But then what explains the fact that Gary made those porcupines ??

So, my Q is: was Gary Jackson a red herring or not ??

reply

See to me it makes more sense that wadenah is really the killer he was running away scared from the girls dead body and got into his truck remember when the snowmobile boy saw him?

reply

right around the 33:34 mark you see him for a quick second his name is Oliver.

reply

now you tell me.

Where there's smoke, there's barbecue!

reply

The killer "Oliver" is indeed that guy that was at the candy store on the back. A hint was that the he lady that works with him asked "Oliver, where did you hide those chocolates?" and it was said that the first victim had eaten chocolates.

reply

good call. you're right.

In any case ... just wanted to say that you need to be more precise when you point out a time mark in a movie - it definitely makes a difference, because the scenes/segments are all precisely organized.

The 33:34 mark is when Jerry is still at the airport, drinking at the bar and watching TV, trying to decide if he's going to take the plane or go back and follow up the murder case. This is not when we see the killer.

We see the killer, Oliver, at 35:45 when Jerry opens the door to enter the store and where the chimes are seen ... right then we see Oliver for a split second.

The time mark in a movie scene really makes a difference.

reply

The killer wasn't listed as "Oliver" in the credits but as "Grey-Haired Man" and played by John R. Taylor.

I saw this when it came out, was disappointed when it wasn't a real thriller, with who's the killer?

Yesterday after reading the boards here, i am convinced the killer was Oliver, the one that is mentioned in these threads.

It is near the end while the clerk is looking for the chocolates bars, and we hear her say "Where did you hide the chockolates Oliver??!". This scene confirmes that Oliver was the killer, and that Black was right all along.

Feels good to be more clear of the conclusion of the movie, and now i think its a far better movie than i did back in 2001 when i first saw it, and didn't understand it.
