Anyone see simalaries between how i met your mother and coupling

I thnk the himym character barney is a mix of patrick and jeff. Because like jeff there are episodes of HIMYM where the episode revolves around his theory. And of course he is like patrick because he has comminment issues. Anyone else see any simalaries to coupling and HIMYM

The American version was really bad. But i think this is the better american equivlant to coupling.

I don't see that many similarities between HIMYM and Coupling. While I find HIMYM interesting to watch, I do not find it to be particularly funny. I think Coupling was a MUCH funnier show. I would put it amongst the funniest shows that I have ever watched.
What I do like about HIMYM is how they tell their stories. I think it has more in common with Seinfeld because of that aspect than it has in common with Coupling.

yesss, I do.... but how i met your mother casts is not sharp at all in acting.. so it's a good writting gone to waste...

coupling is still the best!

reply

Well,
coupling usually makes my face spasms, while HIMYM is really not so funny for a comedy show.
Idea is not bad however first season is quite bad. Maybe the problem lies in fact that I'm not such a fan of American short jokes and gags.
English humor is far better one.

Also I can't compare this two shows because i see no binding points.

There's one obvious similarity:
Both shows play with inverted timelines and multiple perspectives of an event.

Especially HIMYM is very keen on telling a story backwards, like "This is where we are. Now we are going to show you how we got here". This narrating is also often used in Coupling.

Not that common in other sitcoms though.

I've never made the connection myself.

They are both about a group of friends, and a lot of the scenes are set in a bar. But that's about the only similarity.

reply

Coupling was meant to be like a UK version of "Friends." There are differences, like this group of friends having dated each other, and there seems to be more seperation among gender lines.

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.

I never like the 'UK Friends' comparison either.

There are 6 people, 3 men and 3 women. That's pretty much where it ends. Any simmilarities beyond that are tenuous and people wanting to see them, rather than anything.

I actually kind of feel like they based it on Friends and Seinfeld.
They dont all live together of course, not even in the same apt building. But those are just minor situational details.
The character Jeff just reminds me of a northern accented Kramer. He's scruffy, twitchy and usually introduced the oddball theme of various episodes.
He even wears a brown coat quite similar to Kramers.
Then there are the two other guys who frankly look almost as if they were cast for their resemblance to Joey and Ross of Friends.
