Annoying!

I know that I'm in the minority here but I absolutely loathe this programme. Every second of it irritates me. It screams middle class. It's about middle class people, living middle class lives, moaning about middle class things. Maybe I just can't relate to it but I really don't find it funny. Jack Davenport's character is so slappable it's frightening. One scene that has always stuck in my head and makes me cringe is when he goes off on a rant about why men need a lock on the bathroom door. People just don't talk or act like that.

Oh, well! Cue the insults I'm going to get.

reply

So basically you loathe middle class.

reply

To be fair, no, I don't like the middle class. But I just don't find middle class humour funny. Just the same as the middle class don't like working class humour. Or the working class.

A well balanced view - with a chip on each shoulder [biggrin]

Most people in the UK haven't been concerned about "class" for decades. Back in the bad old days most people were born into one class and remained in that class for life. Nowadays there is much more transferring, whether it is because of money, fame or for other reasons

OKAY I have NO idea where to direct you to...

are you PRO low class, like STEPTOE AND SON, FATHER TED and OPEN ALL HOURS

or are you pro high class like KEEPING UP APPEARANCES, YES MINISTER and BLACK ADDER???

Or perhaps some NON comedy shows???

BBC NEWS.... that's all I got. DOWNTON ABBEY IS HIGH CLASS!!!

OH THANK YOU GOD! THANK YOU SO BLOODY MUCH!!! Basil Fawlty

reply

I wouldn't really say any of those programmes are high class. They don't focus on middle class people living middle class lives like it represents the whole of the UK.

"Keeping Up Appearances" is slapstick. It's about a working class woman thinking she's better than that.

"Blackadder" is set in the higher classes but you have the underdog in Baldrick and the humour is universal. It's not something that only the middle classes can relate to.

reply

I agree OP, Davenport's portrayal makes me want to punch him in the face. The castdon't seem to have any chemistry and it's all just trying to be too much like the British Friends and failing miserably.

reply

people don't talk or act like that!!! you know what a comedy is??? do working class people walk like charlie chaplin!!!

reply

That's the beauty of it! They are talking about daily problems and common problems that people come across that's why every individual can find something from themselves. You can't say that you don't while watching.. Jack Davenports character is making a scene from every little tiny problem, that's for sure, but that is his characters base

reply

Watching the show isn't compulsory.

reply

Yep, that's what I was going to say. If you don't like it, why come on here and complain?

reply

PS: Not one of the people on this thread insulted you.

reply

I know. I'm surprised that I wasn't insulted.

As for coming on here to complain that's my right. I'm just stating what I don't like about it. Giving it another perspective if you like. I'm not stopping you or anyone else from watching it. I don't because of how much I hate it.

reply

I know. I'm surprised that I wasn't insulted.

Probably because people who tend to like Coupling (2000) are reasonable people. Not everyone on the interweb is looking for an argument. We appreciate that some people might have other viewpoints 
