I've just been rewatching this on Netflix and got to the end of the 3rd season with the same amount of dread as usual, but I got to thinking... maybe Richard didn't want to be coupled up with Gina on the show. It's hinted on in that last episode that it could happen and I got to thinking... maybe they didn't get along in real life or something similar that would've complicated things.

He didn't want to be typecast as the idiot character so left to persue other acting roles.

Based on what happens in the episode, I doubt the characters would've gotten together.
