How come Jeff is...??

I went through the board and didn't see anyone wondering about this so i decided to bring it up. How come Jeff is so in on sex and relationships when he's most of the time giving the impression he doesn't have much of an experience of his own? Where does he come up with all this wisdom??

reply

I think that most of them are from his imagination, rather than from experience

Steve

reply

Or maybe from observations on other people's experience?? But i doubt he's giving it so much thought.. He sounds so competent he could work as a counselor, not an accountant :)

Yup. This. Oh, and from his porn watching as well.

Because he's a male, kate; it's in his blood. Just as the maternal instinct is in yours.

reply

That was brilliant, you made my day XD

I'm re-watching Coupling again and I just thought the same thing - Jeff seems to know a lot and offer tons of advice while it's assumed he's nearly-virgin.

Maybe Jeff just watched lots of movies, I dunno...

Jeff is also the psychological extension of Steve's own paranoia about sex (bizarre theories and excuses, fear of failure etc). Patrick is Steve's concept of what he thinks he 'should' be (well endowed, devoid of guilt etc).

Similarly, Sally is Susan's vain and controlling side. She wants the perfect man and is frustrated because of it, and Jane is the carefree, but reckless side, happy to enjoy any man but has no sense of commitment.

reply

Your partly right Graewill but Jane is obsessed by and totally in love with Steve.

Erm can't believe I didn't notice that! But yes Jane is a bit different, she is also not quite over Steve and controlling as well as carefree (depending).

It's fairly clear that he has had sex and relationships before. He's 30! That gives him 10-15 years for a bunch of fails. That's still a long time to build up knowledge even if it's only based on disasters, and he does talk about certain situations. It's not implied that Julia is his first girlfriend so presumably he's had them before and he does talk about dates. And he's not so socially inept as to not get them - he's quite cute and can talk, a lot of people are tolerant of people saying stupid things when nervous.

Having said that, a lot of is wisdom isn't really wisdom at all, and that's the point. He's always having to ask for advice. When he gives it out it's often silly things like "the sock gap".

reply

I think that Jeff goes on a ton of dates that go no where. That is most Jeff's own fault. Julia is the first girl that wants to date Jeff long term.

reply

What on earth is everyone talking about? Just because someone keeps giving advice, doesn't mean its any good.

Jeff always gives bad advice and that's what's so hilarious about him among other things of course.

reply

he was spot on with the melty man, though.

when it comes to sex, they constantly have to hold Patrick's hand. he knew jack shi7.

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.
