Uh.....this was released to the movies, was there a TV show?

This came out in 1985 and I saw it at the theater. I own it on both VHS and DVD. When was there a series? Can I download it anywhere?

Actually I remember when the pilot was supposed to be sown. It was after a MNF game. In the football game they announced the pilot was comming up after the game. However the game lasted a lot longer than they thought and they never showed the pilot that night. At least as far as I can remember. I don't think they ever showed this pilot. I was mighty pissed as I was a huge fan of the movie. As I remember now the trailers in the game, they looked really cheezy. It probably would have sucked. Probably good it never went into production.

This movie would be great for a sequel. Probably not with Fred Ward as the star, he's probably too old now. But Chiun could still be played by Joel Grey. That would be the draw for me. Joel Grey played the hell out of that character.

I must be the only person I know who actually saw this, although I can't remember when it was shown.

I don't remember too much but I *do* remember an early scene where Chiun (Roddy McDowell) is addressing the audience, saying how the program should, by rights, be called "The Chiun Show".

The pilot episode was called "The Prophecy" and it did air...once. It was a Monday night right before the Republican Convention in 1988 (which is why it might have been pre-empted on the West Coast). Al Michaels from Monday Night Football did a lead-in, announcing that the following week would be the start of pre-season MNF coverage.
I know this because I was just digging through my video collection and I found the recording I made when it aired. I don't think I watched it a single time since the original air date either...which should tell you how bad it was. I was a big fan of the movie and while Roddy does a very good job replacing Joel as "Chiun", Jeffery Meeks was no Fred Ward!

Thanks for the additional information.

I barely remember it. Just a scene of the charcter jumping from a higher level.

It's been available via Bit Torrent for some time (since it's not available anywhere else, I don't think anyone could have an ethical problem with this), but it's a very low res, poor quality copy. The producers decided to embrace (and increase) the humor quotient and ditch what gravitas the theatrical film had, and it hasn't aged as well as the theatrical version. Easily missable (why one of the writers of the novels liked it better -- and which one? -- I can't imagine).

I just did a search, and it's scheduled to be shown from 9:35 to 10:30 a.m. Central Friday, July 24, on Encore Action.

I have a partial copy of the originally aired pilot; my VCR decided to click off near the end, something I didn't realize till about five minutes had passed. I thought for sure that I'd never get to watch it again in its entirety. One of the other times it aired, I figured it was the theatrical release. I tuned over to catch the movie following it and was stunned to see the last part of the pilot! I really had my doubts that it would show up again, but here it is!

I don't care what others say. I enjoyed it! I love the novels, the film AND the pilot and would have watched the series. I really thought that they captured a lot of the same feel as the film. No series is ever a match for the film it's based on, and many pilots fail. For example, Jodie Foster took over the Tatum O'Neal role in "Paper Moon". Most people would expect it to be a hit. Nope! "M*A*S*H" worked, but the series isn't much like the movie. Maybe "Remo Williams" would have done better than people think if it had been given a chance.

I also watched Jeffrey Meek in "Raven", which I liked far better than its competition: "Walker: Texas Ranger". Blech! He also cropped up as Rayden in "Mortal Kombat: Conquest", which used to air early Sunday morning for some weird reason. Considering some of the material in it, I'll bet a lot of parents had many questions to answer from curious kids who might have tuned in! Besides, I like looking at Jeffrey Meek! *giggle*
