How the hell did Jessica Lange not get an oscar for this?!

Honestly, Lange's performance in this was OUTSTANDING. I can't believe that she wasn't even nominated!

I agree, just saw this film over the weekend. Lange totally should have been nominated at the very least.

Here were the results from 2001:
* 2001 Jennifer Connelly – A Beautiful Mind as Alicia Nash
o Helen Mirren – Gosford Park as Mrs. Wilson
o Maggie Smith – Gosford Park as Constance Trentham
o Marisa Tomei – In the Bedroom as Natalie Strout
o Kate Winslet – Iris as Young Iris Murdoch

Made for TV movies do not qualify for Oscars, only Emmys.

Why? Because she was terrible in it, that's why.

B/c many felt she was doing a redux of a previous role, where she played Francis Farmer. Deja vu does not get you an Oscar.

Even Roger Ebert said, "It's hard to imagine Christina Ricci and Jessica Lange not getting Oscar nominations for their roles."

She was good... but I thought the telephone scene where she has that outburst and starts screaming at her ex-husband went from actually sad, to a little over the top, and then to unintentionally flat out funny.

She was good. She played her role good. But the movie as a whole was not so good.

I thought she was OK, not Oscar-worthy. Was it my imagination, or did she switch accents mid-movie?

I disagree that her performance was over the top. Elizabeth's mother has an equal, untreated mental disorder (though different from hers) and is probably one of the causes for her daughter's mental state. (Both nature and nurture.) I think Jessica Lange was actually very restrained in her performance. She's more psychotic up than Elizabeth, because at least Elizabeth realizes she has a problem, wheras the mother is completely in denial.

I don't know if she should've gotten an Oscar nom for this role, she's done much better, but it's still a great performance - the best of the film, IMO.

Also, the movie is such a cheap summary of the book, which is one of my favs. Oh well. At least it got made?
