She should have been on meds to begin with

Were their no meds when this was written. Don't get me wrong, I like the movie but if she was on some mood stabilizers it would have changed her life. I know I know, there are the people who oppose medications and think we are a over medicated country and I am not saying that is not true but in alot of cases medication is needed, its a must and in this case she needed it badly.

There have always "been meds", but much like the rest of psychiatric care before the last 40 years, they usually did more harm than good. The movie takes place in ~1985 and Prozac entered medical use in 1986 (it wasn't the first modern antidepressant but the class of drugs didn't become popular until Prozac). So basically yeah, there were no meds. And she does spend the last 20 minutes of the film on mood stabilizers, getting on them within 9 months of us meeting her. She seeks and gets help pretty fast compared to some patients.
