Old man at the end is owner of gun, but family line killed off.

If the Old man at the end is the grandson of the gunmaker, (so called father's father) how is that so? His only child, the girl, died. So are we to assume that the old gun smith subsequently knocked someone up to continue his family line?

I know... this always really bothers me.

And another thing: assuming the legend as told at the end is the correct story, how and why was there a second bullet in it.? Was the miracle that a shot and powder appeared in the gun...?
