Where Was Martin Lawrence?

I love ''The Original Kings Of Comedy.I just have one major problem with this movie.Where on earth was Martin Lawrence during casting?Martin should've replaced DL or Cedric.I'm not trying to take anything away from those men. They were both funny. How ever Martin is funnier than both DL & Cedric combined.

reply

are you kidding? Martin's not clever or original at all. he just says things that makes people cringe, it's something anybody can do. I suppose you find Carlos Mencia funny as well? Cedric was at least pretty original, and DL's a legend. You don't knock that man.

reply

Great idea. Only one problem. Martin's stand-up isn't even remotely funny.

Martin was probably in rehab at this time. Looking back on Martin, he has his funny moments, but those moments are far & few between.

Funnier than DL?? You need to see DL Live, or watch D.L. Hughley: Goin' Home. You will more than likely change your opinion.

reply

DL aint funny. He is rude and annoying.

Martin's not a good consistent stand-up. He spends too much time getting into his characters psyche rather than delivering the jokes and laughs. It actually looks like he's doing therapy on himself. He would have slowed the pace of the show. Otherwise, he would deserve to be in the line-up being he's as influential to his generation of comics as any of the other Kings.

Cedric does the same schtick much better. He sets up his characters then delivers the punchline without the same braggadaccio and low-brow jokes that ML leans on. He may not have been the funniest bt he was a much better choice than Martin.

The Kings of Comedy was a successful stand-up tour that started in 1998. It wasn't put together just for the movie so there was no "casting". Martin is a huge star so he can have his own tour. He's not gonna co-headline with three other guys. But the four men were only semi-famous at the time. They decided to join forces to have one powerful show so they could make more money than ever. Putting it on film was a great opportunity for them to be exposed to a wider audience.

Well - Personally I always thought the title was wrong. "Original Kings?" - With that title I guess Martin should have replaced one of them, but using that title none of the 4 should have been in it.

When I think Kings of Comedy (and we're talking about blk comedians) - I think Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor (who probably wouldn't have been able to do a show at that time), And I guess you can throw Martin in there. Rounding out the other two spots - Chris Rock and maybe Eddie Griffin - DL,Cedric,Bernie, and Steve all come after those cats so how could they be "Original Kings?" -

I've always had a problem with that title - and also had a problem with the movie not really being all that funny.

The title of the film implies comedians that are funny!

Its that man again!!

reply

How does "Original Kings" implies comedians that are funny?

I mean by your concept - everyone with an occupation as a comedian is an Original King of Comedy because every comedian is funny to someone.

'I mean by your concept - everyone with an occupation as a comedian is an Original King of Comedy because every comedian is funny to someone. '

Eh, I was just implying that Lawrence was not in it as he is as funny as a bad case of piles.

As for the title of the film, the first four funny people put on this planet deserve the title!

Its that man again!!

reply

The first 4 funny ppl on this planet? What year were you born?

The Original Kings of Comedy is no where near as funny as Delirious, Live on Sunset Script, Here and Now, Raw, You so Crazy, Bigger & Blacker, The Last Stand, Himself, Brain Damage which were all predecessors and one man shows.

Martin wasn't in it because A: he wasn't part of the tour. B: He was already an established comedian ahead of these guys as far as exposure.

'The first 4 funny ppl on this planet?'

They would be the original kings of comedy.

I am sorry but there were funny people before even Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy!!

If you want to restrict yourself to black comedians. Red Foxx, Bill Cosby, Dick Gregory.

I know they were funny ppl before Pryor and Murphy. - I never said they were the first - I only said they were funny long before Harvey, Mack, Cedric, and Hughley

You're the one that said those guys were the first funny ppl on the planet (that's your own quote not mine) - So I gave examples of SHOWS not blk individuals, but concerts turned into movies that were funny (that I have seen) before TOKOC.

And I don't know why you mention Bill Cosby when I did list one of his shows 'Himself'

And since you want to make this a blk/wht thing. - I laughed at Howie Mandle, George Carlin, and Robin Williams harder than I laughed at TOKOC.

Should I name some Asians and Hispanics too - I don't want to limit myself to just blks and whts.

It's been said already that Martin was already an established star at the time the tour was created. Hell, he already has his own one man show in theaters with You So Crazy, so why go backwards?

Now if you wanted some other semi-famous black comics at the time, than Dave Chappelle would have been a perfect choice in 1998 or so.

Bill Bellamy or Joe Torry also could have been a good choice. Joe's brother Guy actually started out on the tour and Tommy Davidson did a few shows here and there.

As for Martin, he was too big at the time, as was Chris Rock, Damon Wayans and possibly even Eddie Griffin.

reply

Yeah - I know this. I'm one of the ppl that said Martin was already Big at the time.

You caught the back end of a debate. - This was my response to someone who said these 4 guys we're the first funny ppl on the planet (or something to that affect)

We were debating more about the Title of the Movie than whether or not Martin should have been in it.

He didn't say these 4 guys were the first funny people on the planet you moron, he said that if you really wanted to call anybody "The Original Kings of Comedy" then you would have to give that title to the first 4 funny people that existed on the planet.

I'd have to disagree there. It would have to be Richard Pryor, Red Foxx, Bill Cosby and Dick Gregory if you want to be technical about it. Those are the comedians who really opened up black comedy. Of course, Foxx would have been dead when this was filmed and Pryor would be in no condition to be onstage. Also, Cosby would never participate in an arena with so much profanity being thrown around. And even with all that going on, people wouldn't show out for these legends they way they did for Harvey, Cedric, DL and Bernie. They were considered OG's because of their age not because of their accomplishments because even up till the time of this movie, their resumes weren't all that incredible. They'd all done Def Jam and three of the four had prime time sitcoms at that time but I wouldn't call them "kings" of anything. Certainly not in the way Cosby, Pryor, Murphy and even Foxx had become recognizable household names in all of America (not just black households). But I'd say they were Kings of their generation of comedy.

As for Chris Rock, I could see him fitting into a slot on this bill even more so since he was more popular than any of them then. But I think he was probably too big for this event.

Griffin, not so much. I've never found him to be very funny. He makes funny faces and voices but he doesn't make me laugh at all and I find him less funny than Harvey who I thought had the weakest routine in "Original Kings of Comedy"..

reply

I wasn't being technical about it. So there's nothing to disagree to. - I was just throwing out random comedians that were funny before these guys.

I just felt it should have been titled something else that's all.

Now that u mentioned it it's Just feels like a different league but ,Chris rock, Eddie Griffin,dl,highly,,that would of been a good comedy series like princes of comedy then introduce the kings.. Bernie, Steve,Martin,ced..then they each have special quest like Eddie special quest would be tommy Davidson and the kings special quest would be Murphy something like that..but yes hands down Richard Pryor and foxx a league all there own
