Questions about the story Pig told to the old man on the bus

At one point during the film when pig is travelling on a bus in the hope of finding Runt he tells an old man that he is sitting next to a story about how Runt was physically abused by her father when she was younger. He then speaks of how they got revenge by killing her dads pet birds. He then went on to say something about Runt being put in the trunk/boot of a car and as a result she was driven around by a salesman or something. I didn't really know what to make of this scene. Was it just a fictional story that Pig either imagined or made up or was runt really abused? Also what was the signinficance of the salesman and her being driven around in the boot of someones car?

Tell you what I got from that whole sequence: the way that the little boy Pig is eerily calm while the whole thing's going on and his whole estate is in turmoil, and the way he stands in the same spot every day waiting for Runt to come back. The two existed in their own self-contained little world even then, and Pig had total faith that everything would work out right and they'd be reunited.

Runt's dad seemed to be a sour old fart, but whether or not the abuse was real or just made up for the story I'm not sure. I think Pig was using Runt's dad as the symbol for the "system" which had taken Runt away from him and forced her into that trade school. He was seeing them both as children again, being mistreated by outside forces. Like the little boy, he was going to wait as long as it took until she returned.
