SPOILER

does anyone here think that Col. Grady, after listening to his son on the phone, knew that there was no war and the whole thing was a huge mistake, but still he's too focused or connected to the mission that he cannot go back? in the 1964 version, it's pretty obvious that Col. Grady doesn't believe that it's his wife speaking to him, but in the remake things are a little more vague. after watching this movie yesterday I'm under this impression...

I think it followed the original to a tee. I think Grady knew at the end, but was in the middle of defensive maneuvers and knew there was no turning back at this point.

We must've seen different originals. In the one I've seen about 20 times, Grady was clearly ripped in half when his wife was speaking. In fact, one of the crew said, "Is it really your wife, sir?" and Grady, anguish evident on his face, mouthed, "I don't know."

I'm convinced, though, that George Clooney's Grady believed it was his son on the radio. Whether he believed in turn that the mission was bogus is open to interpretation.

I just have to wonder why they substituted a son for a wife.

To Oedipus:
I also believe Clooney knew he was speaking with his son. But that means he had to know there was no war and the attack orders were sent by error. So that begs the question as to why he didn't abort the mission?

why he didn't abort the mission?

you would have to say he was obeying an order or procedure, however, ever since the nuremburg trials, it has been established that combat personel can and should disregard any order they believe is lawfully wrong.

so as you say, it does beg the question.
