Wow. 5 times really?? God, that would depress me. You're right though, the characters are very moving. I would watch a follow-up to see how they were all doing.

I hated it. I thought it was incredibly boring and I honestly didn't find most of the "characters" that engaging at all. By the end I felt like it was starting to get better but I still wasn't totally sold, honestly. But I seem to be in the minority.

I'd have to agree with you. And good work on using "characters" loosely; they're not characters, this was their life. Although I cannot relate to the life of a homeless individual, many were choosing the life they led. They admitted to not minding it so much and should they have hated it as much as they made it sound towards the end, then they should've/would've gone to a homeless shelter or sought out aid, programs, assistance, anything. A few of the people really struck me as manipulative. For example, when they were given 30 days to evacuate, many were all sorts of upset. But why? Ultimately they "set up shop" in a place that didn't belong to any of them. They weren't "roughin" it in the woods, they were living on property owned by someone that was liable for everything that took place down there. It's ridiculous to expect Am track to be responsible for all those people. THEY'RE A RAILROAD COMPANY-not a homeless shelter.
I realize that this sounds harsh, but seriously. What if disease really picked up and wiped everyone out, who would be responsible for unsanitary and unsafe conditions? It's crazy.

To sum it up....it's unfortunate (to say the least) that so many are homeless, but people must A) want to change and want help before things will work out differently and B) must be willing to work at their issues. IE Dee refused to give up crack until she was "ready" to do so-that's just ridiculous and manipulative. It was difficult to feel too empathetic to any of the people.

Sounds to me like you didn't have a problem with the film as much as you had a problem with its subjects.

The characters are engaging because they are real--you can't get more interesting subject matter than real people!
