As everything in this film seems to have a metaphoric significance, what was the meaning behind Shigehiko's obsession with dinosaurs and the constant references to them?

He's excited about the discovery of a "new" dinosaur, but in reality it isn't new, because it was around long before him (or anyone else for that matter)...

Sounds like sexual awakening to me.
