Is it because this is Love, Not Lust?

This is my favourite movie of all time. I have watched this movie more than any other, and I just love the innocence conveyed, and the limited dialogue which is more than compensated by the actions, gestures and facial expressions of the lead actors,

I am Australian, and as such I get to see a lot of American movies. But American, and also British and Australian romance movies mostly have the stars climbing into bed on the first date. They are more about 'lust' than 'love'. We dont even get to see the the two stars in this movie kiss, and that in itself is rare as Hollywood loves to focus on the physical, rather than the emotional.

The innocence of Zhao Di (Ziyi Zhang), the patience shown and the determination and energy she exuded, transferred my mind to thoughts of my own past relationships, the desire to love and to be loved the way Zhao Di loved Luo Yusheng in this movie. I think it is something that most of us can only dream of.

I'm replying to myself here as no one else has, lol. In asking the question, "Is it because this is Love, Not Lust?" i'm not for a moment critisizing the film. As mentioned, it is my favourite film of all time. But I personally am tired of American movies, where the couple are into bed on that first or second date. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I loved that this movie was built around real love, not lust.

Oh, agreed.

I think we all yearn for that "innocence" -- that "purity" without the static of sex clouding our senses. The certainty that it's about actually being loved for who one actually is rather than for one's body.

Well yeah, I get that part, and found the movie quite beautiful.

But part of me asks, what kind of love was it at the beginning, when she only saw his face and had not spoken with him? Is she simply reacting to a face that she perceives as beautiful? In that case, that's just another version of lust, except that it's not consummated.

Obviously they married and loved each other deeply, but at the beginning, wasn't that just normal animal attraction... iow, sexual magnetism?

One could argue that it was sexual attraction clouding her senses, much like any of the Victorian novels of Jane Austen or her contemporaries, where the heroines would have obsessions about their "loves".

you make a good point, since how could she be so drawn to him if she didn't even know him, it could only be superficial or on the physical level

or maybe it's that there is a connection between two people, something like love at first sight or soulmates if you believe in those things

so many movies, so little time

The innocence of Zhao Di (Ziyi Zhang), the patience shown and the determination and energy she exuded...
Those aspects and the way she portrayed/revealed them are the main reasons this film is so beautiful to me.
