Is this movie available anywhere?

Is this movie available anywhere? There are loads of people who want to
see this movie, but none of us know where to get a copy from. I can
only see the book or the original screenplay available for sale on
Amazon.com but not the film. I only know that this book was written by
Arundhati Roy and that she also acted in this film. I read somewhere
that this film won National Award then. Is this a film or a TV serial?
What is the length of this film? More information will be appreciated
from people who have seen it. I have seen only one review that too only
on this site. Please let me know where this title is available. Thank
you.

it IS a film. a fantastic one. yes, it won the national award but was screened on doordarshan only once, that too in the late night slot. so not many people have seen it. it is said that the national archives has lost the original print.

I happened to see it last week on VCD, which was copied from VHS. A friend had somehow, almost miraculously discovered that old VHS in the library of national institute of design on his trip to Ahmedabad. I will suggest to check in the National Film Archievs of India (for the fact that NFDC partially had financed the production) or in the video library of Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.(though I am not sure about the institute...I never saw it while I was there for 3 years)

but, the film is worth all the efforts.

a beautiful, beautiful film.

reply

Thank god. Someone responded who has seen the film. Thank you so much. Do you still have a copy of that VCD. Are you in India? I have email NFDC a number of time but have had no response.

Please Please reply.

Thank you.

I don't have the copy on me right now, since its been travelling in our friend circles.

Meanwhile try your luck at National Film Archives of India (NFAI)on nfai.nic.in and Film and television Institute of India (FTII) on ftiindia.com These sites have the contact no. and fax no. Do not email, because these are government institutes and I seriously doubt if they chek their emails at all.

If you call at NFAI, please contact Mr. Shashidharan - the director of the Archives. He is a resourceful person and if he finds you genuinely interested in films, will help you out of the way. At FTII try to contact Mr. P.K.Nair. who is a very senior and respected fingure and very very helpful and knowledgeable.

Both the institutions are in Pune, Maharashtra. If you are located in Mumbai then its a hardly 3 hours way there by road,so that you can personally go and meet them. (I know, asking somebody to travel all the way to pune for a copy of a film sounds little odd, but experience tells me that things don't move fast and smooth in NFAI or in FTII for that matter..!!!)

So take it easy, I am sure, one of these guys will help you to find a good, viewable copy of the film.(If nothing works, we will see whats to be done about it...there are always enough ways to get hold of the print!!)

Frolicer.

Hello Frolicer,

Can you please send me your email addr through a private message feature on this site so that I ca be in touch with you.

I have tired to NFAI but they say I need permission from the Producer to get a copy. Mr. Shashidharan was not available. FTII did not help much when they knew I am not a student from the institute.

I live in Bangalore now. So the only way to contact them is on Phone.

I an trying to find it from NFDC. Now I see hope of getting this film.

Thanks

Dear all.
Yes, the movie's definitely worth the effort of looking for it.
I was one of those nerds who waited up to see the movie on DD all those years ago, and managed to record most of it on VHS, apart from the initial credits.
I have watched it so many times that the video is grainy and has a line through it. I will try convert it to a digital format as soon as I get myself some new gadgets: with the producers' permission of course!
In the meantime, if anyone lays their paws on a decent print, please let me know!
Cheers.

i saw this movie on DD in the late 80s, and later went to study at an art college. after a few days there, i immediately recalled the film as there were so many parallels. since then i've been looking for the film but it was so obscure, most peopple hadn't even heard of it. if anyone has a copy, i'd be VERY interested in getting one (i'm willing to pay cash, or trade one of my dvds, whatever).

my email is [email protected]

I am seeing this thread now in August 2006.

I'd heard a lot about this movie, and have been wanting to see it for quite some time.

Since it would not be possible for everyone who really wants to see this movie(including myself) to contact FTII or the other instituitions or even try to contact the director, would anyone be kind enough to upload this movie somewhere so that others could also view it?

I understand that this telefilm was not exactly made for commercial purposes, and so i dont see the makers of the movie objecting to the idea of it being hosted online. It's understandable if someone were to lose money over it, but i dont think this movie would face that issue, since it is way too rare that i doubt even the archives would have it.

In this day and age when all kinds of movies(new and old, commercial and arthouse) are being shared in forums by means of torrents and download servers, it would be really great if someone who has a copy of this gem could share it with others. After all, that act - of sharing - is the spirit of the Internet, i believe.

If someone is kind enough to do it but needs help in knowing how to share or host it online so that all could benefit, please contact me at [email protected]

I really hope someone responds, as it would be a pity if this were to remain a unseen treasure, rather than being savoured by many a true film-lover.

Hello all,

I am currently in posession of a copy of IWAGITO. The quality is pretty bad. Its in 4:3 (pillarboxed). It was probably digitized from a VHS. Sound isnt that great either but trust me, this film is way above all that and you really wont notice the quality once you start viewing it. IWAGITO is certainly what I would call an Indian cult classic.

I could send a CD by regular post...on the condition that you first watch the film and in exchange send me something you think lives up to it. E-mail me at: [email protected]

Yes, the movie is now available on youtube.
I was lucky to catch this movie yesterday at India Habitat Centre. It was screened as part of the festival on Delhi in 80s.
