What was with the hidden room thing?

Does anyone know why that hidden room was there? Was it supposed to be significant to the story? Initially when it was first revealed I thought that the creepy man (who abducted a girl from her bedroom one night) used to live there and that maybe the addicts would discover the truth behind the urban legend. I was obviously way off base when it came to my original theory. Can someone please explain this to me?

Ya, that place! To get into that area he had to open a hidden passage way behind some storage shelves. Close to the beginning of the movie I thought they were going to integrate the "ghost" story about the kidnapped girl into the plot and they would discover that the house they were in was where the little girl was taken to. There was never any follow up on the hidden room and its significance.

I probably should have rephrased the question in the subject line. Yes, I know Hector fell into the well, I think that was obvious. What I'm asking is - Why was the room there in the first place? I don't know about you, but I don't have any hidden secret rooms behind storage shelves in my house....well, unless you count my Batcave.

All jokes aside though, I thought the creepy story the hick told was going to play into the plot. You know, like they would discover that the creepy kidnapper that was in the little girls bed OWNED the house or used it (in particular the hidden room) to "stash/hold" his victims. The whole hidden room "thing" was never really explained - do you know what i mean?
