I am an angel by day - A devil by night

reply

Probably still going to be on BBC1 but i dont know when its to start

reply

Apparently it's supposed to be on BBC1 Friday 21st July 2006 at 8.30pm. Saw it on a site somewhere.

reply

It does start on Friday 21st July on BBC One. The episode is entitled 'footloose'. George goes back to Ultron for a game of poker and loses his body, and gets a new one, which explains how they are going to handle the switch from Ardal O'Hannlon to James Dreyfus.

reply

Yep, I just watched the episode, and have to say it has lost all of it's charm. The cheesy SFX, the annoyingly simple and childish jokes, James Dreyfus...

reply

OMG its crap and whats happened to Janets noes...

reply

So does anyone know why Ardal O'Hanlon left the show? Sick of the crappy scripts?

reply

I've been trying to find that out. I'd appreciate an answer too.

reply

I think he just left because it was time to pursue other things in his career. He's been in the show for 6 years and he probably wants to concentrate on his stand up comedy.

Not sure about this first episode... it was very funny... but I'm hoping I warm to James Dreyfus. Loved him in Thin Blue Line and Gimme Gimme Gimme, but not sure about him taking over as George. I loved Ardal's 'ways' of making George who he was... the way he said stuff, the way he moved his hands and his funny little laugh... awww I'm sad now...

But Emily Joyce (Janet) looked fabulous! Very slim and sleek and the hair is long and lovely! She's a fabulous actress... could never get tired of her in My Hero!

Mrs Raven.. vile as ever.. Just the way I like her lol

reply

It was terrible! They should have either found somebody better than James Dreyfus to play George or they should have finished off the show completely!
I normally like JAmes Dreyfus but he is so the wrong choice for this show. It would have been better if they had brought somebody in who was a tad more masculine, but still that little bit dumb!!!

The only saving grace is that the other characters are still as funny as ever -Hugh Dennis's doctor has to be one of the best characters on tv! As does Mrs Raven - class!!

reply

I like what they have done with the 'different' George. It would have been too easy to just get someone in that was just like Ardal O'Hanlon, someone who would have just tried to copy him, and that would be something that just wouldn't work. Don't forget that they could have just brought in someone else to play the role and just not mention it at all.

It's always strange seeing someone else in a role when you have come to love someone else in it. Let's give James Dreyfus a chance to settle into the role before we decide that they have 'ruined' the series like some people have suggested.

It was a nice surprise that Ardal O'Hanlon turned up in the first scene, was not expecting that.

And I thought that the improvised Thermoman suit with red pants and a brown jumper was hilarious! I'm off to recesue some donkeys stuck in quicksand!

reply

of course i'm going to miss ardal cos he was fantastic at the role but yesterday while watching it was was hilarious of course i'd like ardal back but jame s did a brilliant job yesterday and like the person above said try giving him a chance cos weel in a way its like a doctor who thing. same character but different face and personality.

The new Thermoman was funny - "I deserve to put my feet up" - but I'm not sure if I liked him. Plus, he seemed gay.

reply

Dreadful. Suddenly we go from the childish Irishman to an overacting, camp Englishman. I doubt whether the series would have lasted for more than one season if JD had played George from the start.

The BBC are desperate to keep the series running, and JD is obviously deserate to get his face back on the TV. Bad combination.

reply

It was always going to be hard for James Dreyfus to take over the role and I'm reserving judgement until I've seen a couple of more episodes. Last night did seem a bit flat and laboured at times, but I for one is not going to judge on just one episode. It's like your first day at a new school, it's going to seem weird after having four or five years of some one you know well, and then having a new face to look out for. Just hope it's not downhill for the series.

reply

Oh my God! Ardal O'Hanlon is no longer on the show?!? I'm in the U.S. and we get the show here on Public Broadcasting System. 'My Hero' was one of the funniest shows on TV. We probably won't see the new season-er-sorry- I mean series for probably another year. From what I'm reading here, it sounds as if the new guy was not the best choice in replacements.

(shakes head sadly)

reply

I think James is much better as Thermoman. Don't get me wrong I like Ardal too, but for me he was just Father Dougal (from Father Ted). I prefer James, because he's not been in a series long enough for him to establish a character. This could be his benchmark. Got Gormenghast from my local library and apparently James is in that. So I'll look forward to watching it.

reply

Well, in all fairness, I love the show and once we get the new series over here, I'll certainly give it a chance (hey, Bewitched was successful for many years after the Dick switch). Frankly, I know nothing about the new actor playing George/Thermoman. I've never seen him in anything, thus I will reserve judgement until I actually see the new episodes.

Question for those in the know: Do they attempt to explain the change of George's appearance in the plot of the new series? (Not looking for a spoiler so I don't need details. Just a 'yes' or 'no' will suffice).

reply

yes they do

Thanks. Hopefully I won't have to wait a year or two to see how it plays out. :)

Update (better late than never). Saw the new series with the new 'George.' I can tell the replacement (sorry, the actors name escapes me at the moment >Something< Dreyfuss?)is a talented thespian and quite funny in his own way and I hope to see him in something else in the future. However, as Ardal O'Hanlon's replacement in 'My Hero'- sorry,it just left me a bit cold. I gave it a try, but just can't bring myself to buy it.
I heard earlier this year that 'My Hero' was cancelled. Gone gone bye bye.

Oh well.

Hi James Dreyfuss who plays the new Thermoman after Ardal O hanlon loses his body in a poker match, is also in Notting Hill for a small park so check him out in that. Maybe you have also heard of The thin blue line or Gimme gimme gimme. Hope that helps.

reply

Indeed there have been mixed reviews. I also live here in the states and wish we could see the new series. Maybe BBC America will air it at some point and we won't have to wait a year for PBS to put it on.

I liked Dreyfus in "The Thin Blue Line" and "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie." I'm willing to give him a chance as Thermoman. O'Hanlon is on another series now, directed by Ben Elton, called "Blessed." Does anyone know if that series will continue?

reply

i've been in London for a couple of weeks so not seen the new series and didn't even know james dreyfus had taken over the role of george! can't wait to see how he plays it, I actually saw james in london in this play called Donkey's Years - he was so funny! i think it's easy to shoot people down without giving them a chance, so i'll reserve judgement till i've had a chance to see some of the new series

reply

I just thought of something.

All the way through he kept saying "I'm still George, I'm the same person", but then he was also completely different.

reply

Actually really good new series. Enjoying James D playing Thermoman, even though it is different, really quite enjoyable.

Chandler: You got a manny!?

reply

I liked it. It was a change from Ardal... I think Ardal is great, but James is equally as funny, if not more.

"He seems gay"

That's the idea. He's obviously *not* the same as George, which I think was a good idea. I think he still loves his wife etc. but he might begin getting feelings for Crispin *.*

When I attended a filming of an episode of "Home Again" in Teddington last year they said they were making this series at that time and that Ardal had too many committments,he had got rather popular.I am not happy with the change. The supportimg cast is strong and I hope they can carry it,then Ardal can be got back for another series.I saw Hugh Dennis in a recording of "Mock the Week" and he was excellent with filling in between takes.Re:Teddington it is "Coupling",I am missing.

reply

okay. so he obviosly explained it to his wife but how do you get round explaining it to his mother in law, who as far as i'm aware didn;t know he was an alien.

reply

they just told them that the real george decided to leave her

Will ardal ever be coming back to the show? i only started watching the show a few months ago and i loved it with the original George. I've only seen glimpses of the new thermoman but i dont think i'll ever be able to come to terms with the fact that its a completly different person!!! Oh well i hope someone can answer my question!

reply

This show was awful to begin with. Crappy script and canned laughter to tell the idiots when to laugh. Ardal o hanlon is a one trick pony, and anyone that disagrees with me only laughs when they hear someone else laughing so they dont look thick.

reply

Well I disagree with you, I thought it was funny with Ardal. The episodes with the new guy started last weekend on PBS and they're not funny at all, so it's done with for me.

reply

If it was just he lost his body then why are all his mannerisms different, when clearly he has the same brain and memories???

reply

say that the "real George" just up and left Janet. That would be even more out of character than turning George into a feminine gay man who wants a job. The George we know and love has literally saved the world for his wife and family. He wouldn't realistically leave her or the children. Even Janet's uppity parents shouldn't believe that.

reply

I thought that My Hero was one of the funniest shows ever put on television, but I was wrong. Ardal O'Hanlon was the one who made the show funny. Same with Father Ted. It wouldn't have been funny without "Dougal". Just the stuffy priest and the drunk priest don't make a good pair. In My Hero, Ardal completed the perfect dynamic for the show and made it one of the funniest shows ever. James Dreyfus does, in fact, effectively ruin the show. Don't get me wrong, he was good in the Thin Blue Line, but outside that dynamic, his performance get dull and very, VERY annoying after about 5 minutes.

To all you idiots saying the show is better with Dreyfus, are you all watching the same show as I am? I've seen 4 episodes with Dreyfus and they all sucked hard.

How does it make it better for George to be completely different in his new body? If he's supposed to truly be the same person that Ardal O'Hanlon played, he ought to have the same personality.
They're even trying to change the other characters, especially Janet, slightly to compensate. It sucks, they ruined the show, it needs to die. They shouldn't bother starting series 7, or even finishing series 6, without Ardal O'Hanlon.
