I could've lived with them parachuting in a fully different personality for George/TM as he's an alien anyway. I mean he'd even had a rather lax attitude towards loving his human wife Janet over some of the first five series (due to having a platoon of writers I'd wager) so they could have let the spousal thing drop and just have the replacement actor carry on as a lodger. What went beyond the pale was having the camp (downright girly) James Dreyfus version of George/TM persist in wanting Janet to love him presumably in the sexual sense.
That was a deal breaker for me, even after casually watching the first five series of possibly one of the most inconsistent and implausible family sitcoms I ever bothered to follow. If they had possibly let George Monday morph into whatever James Dreyfus felt comfortable doing, it may have been okay - at least not so sad.
All the cat essence nonsense and pining for Janet to let him back into her bed was pure rubbish.
Eeek!!! I'm getting dressed.
