Wrestlemania 5 Review

I have developed a scoring card to give the most accurate star rating for my reviews. For the most part I think they are pretty accurate:


5 Star Match= A 3.0 star IMDB rating

Here we go Wrestlemania 5 returning to the Trump Plaza as the Mega Powers explode.

Match 1: King Haku Vs Hercules: Haku jumps Hercules but Hercules changes the momentum. Hercules controls the match until he tries going after Heenan outside the ring. Haku follows him out and catches him with a clothesline. Hercules regains control in the ring and tries going up top. He jumps off only to have Haku catch him with an awesome super kick in mid air. Haku is controlling until he misses a swing and Hercules gets a belly to back suplex bridge for the pin at 2:41. I think this match was clipped down for time. 1 1/2 stars.

Match 2: Rockers Vs Twin Towers: Rockers use alot of double teaming that makes Ventura complain. Akeem catches Shawn Michaels with a vicious clothesline that makes the audience oooh. Rockers fight back but Shawn comes off the top rope and gets caught by Bossman in a spinbuster. He tags in Akeem who goes for the big splash and the pin at 6:47. Nice tag match 2 1/2 stars.

Match 3: Brutus Beefcake Vs Ted Dibiasie. Dibiasie shows off his new million dollar belt to Donald Trump. Both guys do alot of punching eventually both guys fall outside the ring and it ends in a double countout. 1 1/2 star.

Match 4: Fabulous Rougeu Brothers Vs Bushwhackers. Boring tag match Bushwhackers win it at 3:29. 1 star.

Match 5: Mr Perfect Vs Blue Blazer. Perfect debuts his trademark singlet tights. Some nice wrestling. Blue Blazer controls most of the match until he tries a splash off the top rope only to catch both of Hennings knees in the abdomen. Henning recovers and immediatly slaps on the perfect plex for the pin at 3:03. I think this match was also clipped for time. 2 Stars.

Match 6: Tag Team Championship Match: Demolition Vs Mr Fuji and Powers Of Pain. Fuji does some damage in there. Both teams control for awhile until it breaks down. Fuji tries throwing salt at Smash but he hits Warlord instead. Demolition hit their finisher on Fuji for the win at 6:17 to retain the titles. 2 stars

Match 7: Dino Bravo Vs Ronnie Garvin: Jimmy Snuka makes his return to the WWF and the match starts. Nothing great Bravo wins with the side suplex at 3:36. 1 star.

Match 8: Strikeforce Vs Brainbusters. Strikeforce is back together for the first time since Martel got injured the previous summer by Demolition. They control early and most of the match until Tito misses the flying forearm and catches Martel by mistake. Brainbusters take over and beat on Tito, Tito tries to make a tag but Martel turns his back on him. Martel then leaves the ring to the boos of the crowd. Brainbusters finish it with the spiked pilldriver for the win at 7:33. 2 1/2 stars.

Match 9: Andre The Giant Vs Jake Roberts. Big John Studd is special guest referee. Andre jumps Jake then throws him face first into the exposed turnbuckle that he took the cover off while Jake was making his way to ringside. Jake fires back and gets Andre tied in the ropes. Nothing great in this match. Jake gets knocked out of the ring and tries to bring the bag into the ring. Andre attacks Studd and they argue inside then Dibiasie attacks Jake and steals Damion. Jake runs him down and throws the snake into the ring to chase out Andre. Jake wins by DQ at 4:27. 1 star.

Match 10: Hart Foundation Vs Honky Tonk Man and Greg The Hammer Valentine. Standard tag match nothing great. Hitman smacks Honky with the megaphone for the win at 2:41. 1 star

Match 11: IC championship match: Ultimate Warrior Vs Ravishing Rick Rude. Rude tries to knee Warrior in the mid section but hurts his knee on Warriors belt. Warrior pummels him all over the place Rude gets the upper hand only to have the Warrior fight back. Rude gets knocked outside and Warrior tries a verticle suplex back into the ring. Heenan grabs the leg Warrior falls down and Rude covers while Heenan holds Warriors legs for the three count at 6:21. Warrior knocks Heenan all over the place afterwards. 3 stars

Match 12: Hacksaw Jim Duggan Vs Bad News Brown: Another filler ends in a double DQ when both guys start using foreign objects at 3:46. 1 star.

Match 13: Red Rooster Vs Bobby Heenan: Heenan still hurting gets beat on by Rooster. Heenan goes shoulder first to the steel post and Rooster gets an easy win in 29 seconds. Dud.

Match 14: World Title Match: Machoman Randy Savage Vs Hulk Hogan. Elizabeth is at ringside trying to support both men. Some technical wrestling in the beginning. Some by Hogan which might surprise some fans. Hogan uses power Savage uses speed. Savage pulls the hair hogan gets mad and grabs a fistful of tights and send him flying out of the ring. Hogan picks up Savage and throws him over the top rope. Elizabeth causes interference outside the ring when she tries to stop Hogan from running Savage into the post. Savage counters and rams Hogan into the post. Ref throws Elizabeth out of the building. Back in the ring Hogan gets busted open. Savage goes up top for the flying elbow and connects. Hogan hulks up three punch big boot big leg and the win at 17:38 and his second title reign. Jesse Ventura goes nuts about how he might come out of retirement and take the chumpster out. A great match second best in Wrestlemania history. I give it 4 stars.

Overall, this show earns an even 7.0 stars out of 10.0, it finishes just a hair behind mania 3 and is now the second best Mania of that time. Here are the standings.

Best match: Macho Vs Hogan: Savage now has the distinction of winning best mania match twice.
