I'm curious to know how many different 'versions' are out there now. I recently acquired a 3-CD set that has all the VaS episodes at Best Buy. The quality seems good, much better than another version I found on eBay a couple of years ago. That version seems to be produced from a bad rotoscope or, more likely, from a video made of a TV screen on which was playing some other version of VaS. Clearly this production is in the public domain, which means anyone can produce & distribute copies of it. It's a shame

"Victory at Sea" is one of the greatest film documentaries of all time, one geared to a mass audience (produced by NBC) for television over 50 years ago, but written & edited by people who knew what they were doing.

Also, VaS was broadcast about 7 years after the end of World War II, and featured a considerable amount of remarkable real war footage, with a variety of special effects scenes (usually involving sea and air battles) shot using models and miniatures.

Nearly all of the footage used in VaS had no audio track, but the brilliantly written narration and Richard Rodgers now-famous musical score elevated this series to a level rarely achieved in documentary filmmaking. It should be pointed out that VaS was patriotic in its approach, though episodes that dealt with defeat & surrender should be seen by all Americans who may think that it doesn't matter whether the United States wins or loses on the global stage. It is difficult to imagine NBC producing anything like this today.
