Viewing It 19 Years Later...

Aside from the incredible cheesiness of this movie I find it hilarious we were supposed to cheer for these people over the course of the next 7-8 films. Mia driving into oncoming traffic while giggling her ass off going 120 mph. Brian doing the same thing while he races the ferrari. Just so stupid. Endangering innocent people at every turn lmao. You gotta love the "family" tagline as the series continued. As long as our family is taken care if it doesnt matter if we put the lives of your family at risk. So incredibly DUMB.

Watched it for the first time in 2020. Haven't watched any of the sequels. Always wondered if I was missing out on a cultural touchstone, but after watching the movie...i didn't miss out on anything.

You had to have seen it when it came out.
"He's got nitrous oxide in his blood and a gas tank for a brain."

Brian driving with eyes effectively shut in the 2nd one , was probly the dumbest thing i saw.

reply

“The stare and drive”? So corny. The 2nd one was nothing but one giant cheese fest with horrid acting.

i guess you've never been a 17 year old boy

reply

I mean it was fun when I first saw it but it's a ripoff of Point Break.

reply

It's definitely influenced by Point Break, but I'd be lying if I said I haven't watched this film more than I've watched Point Break over the years.

I've seen Point Break like twice. I've seen The Fast and the Furious probably 20 times.

reply

Did you get it, eventually?

reply

I saw this in a drive-in the first time. Definitely made it seem more fun than it actually was. Makes me wonder if I would have been a fan of the whole series if I wasn't introduced like that.

STFU

There's nothing unusual about cheering or rooting for badly flawed characters in movies when it is their story that we are privy to.

One of my favorite movies is Unforgiven. Everyone is rooting for a known murderer who ends up killing the sheriff and most of his deputies.

As for this film? Yeah, we root for them but I have not seen even one of the sequels if that gives you some idea of what I thought of the characters. Overall though, I enjoyed this film as a guilty if cheesy pleasure.

reply

It worked on some levels, and as a standalone film it would something to revisit periodically, but it spawned a seemingly endless parade of shittier-as-they-go sequels.

reply

Its a great guilty pleasure movie.
