Street Racing must be the worst spectator sport ever


You watch them scream off the line, then either never see them again during the race, or see them cross the finish line if it's a full circuit.

Can you explain why he's wrong? I'm not saying he isn't but it seems to me unless you can keep up with the cars that's exactly how it would be.

It's not just about that, though if you're a gearhead then that alone is worth it, but it's also for the social aspect and car show effect. People like to see the way other people customize.

I love car shows too! Some cars are kind of boring but there are always a few that are customized very creatively and uniquely.

The Bullitt is nice choice of Pony. Don't care about sound systems much anymore but I like the alum wheels and the airflow is great in that edition, making the engine sound awesome. I also like some of interior design choices and the external similarities to the '68 fastback from the movie because they're subtle similarities. They didn't try too hard, basically, which probably would've ruined it. Are you a fan of the movie? Is that why you like this edition? Or is it just the tires and sound system?

I have a green '72 Grande with a hardtop. Originally I just got it for the Cleveland 351 but now I love everything about it. It's about time for an engine rebuild so it will be a good time to make some modifications. I'll be changing the carb out from the original 2v 2100 to either a Holley 4150 or Dominator. I'm a little uneasy about the Dominator though because I don't necessarily wanna cross the line into a racing car (Thank God the original carb I have wasn't that 4v, low-emissions 4300 crap). I like the adjustable secondary linkage in the 4150. Obviously, I'll be changing the stock manifold too, probably with an Edelbrock alum dual-plane with RPM Air Gap.

I'll probably change the heads to alum and use studs on the block to keep them extra stable. But the best change in planning: new, reverse dome pistons. I'll probably change the comression ratio from the stock 9:1 to something more like 9.65:1. I don't want anything over 10:1. I want reverse dome, probably 16-cc, for good quench, improving combustion and preventing damaging detination (also sick of the knocking, even with 93 octane fuel). I think these mods should give me a good balance between power and fuel economy since I want to keep it on the street. I'll adjust the timing accordingly after changing the the size of intake and exhaust ports on the heads (but I'll keep them canted of course) as well as all the other changes. It will definitely require timing adjustment. I'll throw some copper plugs into that bad boy to top it off.

What do you think? Any ideas?

That is a beautiful car! I'm a classic guy all the way. What engine? 383, 426 or 440? Did you have the custom paint job done yourself?

My dad had a '69 mach 1 with a 428SCJ. I'd probably be the one to inherit it but it was wrecked by my uncle a long time ago.

Yeah, they have places with 100+ octane around here but I want my mods to give me combustion efficiency without it. Don't wanna buy it I guess.

Yeah I believe the 4v was gone from the challenger rt by '71. And I figured a 440 but had to ask to confirm my suspicions. I love me a hemi. To be honest, I think I'd put your car in my top 5 70's cars.

Instead of a 4v carb, I was considering 3 2's as well but if I did, I'd probably go for vacuum actuated instead of mechanical. In fact, at one point I was drooling at the thought of dual quads but i just don't think it's necessary for what I want. Not that it wouldn't be cool.

So this has inpired me to compile a quick top 5 70's list off the top of my head. The 60's is a whole new ball game. I'd have to think about that much harder. At one time I admit I was bias to performance a lot more that aesthetics but now I've integrated the two. Here goes:

5. '70/'71 Challenger R/T (Sorry it's not lower but hey, top 5 for me is still great!)

4. '70 Camaro Z28 LT1 (My fav Chevy but slightly even with '69 as well)

3. '70 Chevelle AS LS6 (an amazing model!)

2. '70 HEMI Barracuda (similar to the Challenger but there's some stuff I like a little more)

1. '70 to '73 Mustang variants (And their varying engine options. Not a big fan of the Windsor though)

I know that's a lot of early 70's but, as you guessed, I'm a ponywars guy. In fact, the only reason I referred to the Bullitt as a pony is because its inspiration was from the '68 Mustang GT fastback.

I was trying to squeeze a Pontiac or 'vette in there somewhere, but they just didn't make the cut. Maybe if it was a top ten list.
