I don't understand this movie at all

So, I'm not really in the target audience. I just saw #7 to see how they handled Walker's character. I'd seen Tokyo Drift when it came out, but that was all for me. I decided to go back and watch this first movie to catch up on some history with these characters.

I was shocked that Diesel's character turned out to be a thug. I was really hoping he would be innocent (ish). So I don't understand, at all, why Walker's character let him go. It didn't seem to be just about the sister.

And how does Diesel go from being the leader of a crime gang who leads a cop astray to the leader of a gang that apparently does contract law enforcement work?

reply

In the fourth film Brian says to Mia that he let Dom go because he respected him more than he respected himself at that moment. He had felt guilty about investigating him as an undercover cop and using him.

reply

You need to watch them all before judging them

reply

Did I judge them? No. I made a factual statement. Diesel's character in the first movie is a thug. He's robbing trucks. He's not the hero.

reply

Ok, judge was the wrong word, so there's no need to get bent out of shape, but I'm saying you need to watch them all in order for them to make more sense to you. Yes, Diesel is a thug in the movie, he was never the hero. That was probably more Paul's role as he was the cop (even though he was 'corrupted'), but the movie is about friends, family and racing. That's what the series plays on as it goes on....those who have seen the movies understand this. By the 5th film, they're all essentially criminals anyway, so it's not that big of an issue really. One of those cases where you're "rooting for the bad guys"

Record for fastest contradiction goes to you, my friend. Or maybe the least understanding what the word "factual" means.

reply

Yeah it's best to watch the whole series so that you see how each character comes into the story and everything falls into place for what the story of the 7th film shows.

reply

Yeah, this is the typical marketing driven add everything to be cool and sell movie. It's about as deep as a puddle.

Restrepo (2010) Thank you Hetherington

Check out "Point Break" if you haven't seen it yet. The first one is more or less a remake of that movie and it handles the themes and interaction between the protagonist and antagonist much better than this movie.

From the fourth movie on they're more or less just heist movies with a loose continuity between them. Don't put too much thought into them.

Yeah, I was hoping he would be innocent(ish) too. He never once mentions he's sorry for beating up that guy with a wrench. That at least would have made him more sympathetic in my eyes.

I liked the movie, but they should have made Diesel's character more sympathetic.

Very good. But brick not hit back!

I thought this at first but if you listen to what he’s saying I think he was actually being remorseful. He says he didn’t intend to attack Kenny Linder (the racer who caused his father's death). He describes how Kenny can only work as a Janitor now and has to ride a bus to work.

Dom understands it was a racing accident and that it’s his own actions that have led to his lifetime ban from professional racing. He has to live with that now. Street racing is all he has.

reply

The tone in his voice as well as the music in the background kind of make me feel that he is sympathetic for it. The person killed his dad - that was how he reacted to it.

Also, whenever they hijacked the trucks, they didn't kill the drivers, the just tranquilized them.
