Why 'All American Girl'?

I don't quite get the title. =s

Whether or not you take a sympathetic stance, what does Mary K Letourneou's sexual/romantic relationship have to do with patriotism? How is this typical of the beliefs of our nation? If it's meant to by ironic, then how is it a deconstruction or disparity towards the concept of all-American-girlness? Furthermore, it seems a bit silly to refer to a 36 year old woman as a "girl"?

It just baffles me. o.0

What are your ideas, people of of the internets? What is the significance of "All American Girl" in the title of this film?

reply

I think they chose that title because for all intents and purposes Mary was the "american girl." She had a beautiful family, a home in the suburbs, and was the teacher all children wanted and all teachers respected. She seemingly had it all until she did the unthinkable--have an affair with a 13 year old and bear his children. It was such a shock because Mary Kay didn't appear to be the "type" of person who would do such a thing. I think the moral of this film is to not make assumptions about people.

Yes, that's exactly what I think. You explained it perfectly.

PLUS her late father was a well-known politican who ran for President

I thought it was because she's a blonde-haired blue-eyed white woman, whereas Vili was of Pacific Island descent. It's like the stereotypically "bored" American woman wanting some excitement in her life, so she seeks someone "exotic".
