favorite gang movies of the 40's:
"city across the river",from 1949,based on irving shulmans,"the amboy dukes",one of the first classic 'j.d.' novels, as well as one of the very first 'j.d.' movies,co-starring a very young tony curtis.
favorite gang movies of the 50's:
"the wild one',from 1953,starring a tuff young & slimmer marlon brando and the foul looking lee marvin, although normally written up as a 'biker movie',i feel it still falls under the street gang ethos on its principals alone and what great leather jackets all of 'the black rebels motorcycle club' wear.....check out the chick named 'britches',that rides in with lee marvins bunch,'the beetles',played by the lucious yvonne doughty.
"rebel without a cause",starring a surly james dean in a red wind breaker, rolled cuff blue dungarees, white t-shirt and engineer boots, also exceptional are the young sultry natalie wood, the feral sal mineo and as 'the gang',glowering young screen hooligans, corey allen, frank mazzola, dennis hopper, jack simmons, jack grinnage and nick adams.
"the blackboard jungle",from 1955 starring an exceptional sidney poitier,a crazed young vic morrow as class bully 'artie west' and as "the gang",a sullen group including, young director to-be paul mazursky, jameel farar as classs half-wit santini[later to become jamie farr,'klinger on m.a.s.h.],dan terranova, rafael campos and danny dennis.
"teenage crimewave",from 1955,starring the loutish sorta john garfield looking tommy cook and the sexy carolyn jones looking with her short pixie cut, mollie mccart, this film is more so 'a young killer couple on the lamb in a stolen car saga',but i think it fits the genre perfectly.
"running wild",from 1955,starring the over the top vivacious, mamie van doren,as well as the brooding young john saxon as young street gang thugs on a hot rod ramage with there gang.
"rumble on the docks",from 1956,starring young pretty boy james darren, "the gang" included a young greasey gargoyle like robert blake and the pug faced dan terranova.
"the violent years",from 1956,starred a gang of unknown lovelies and was written by ed wood jr. but was a facinating lurid account of a 'tuff chick gang' out for kicks.
"crime in the streets",from 1956,starring sal mineo as well as future directors to be,john cassavetes and mark rydell, was a decent little tale about inner city street gangs[originally a tv drama that was deamed to lurid for television].
"young and dangerous",from 1957,starring the lovely lili gentle and connie stevens,as well as 'j.d.' tuff guy mark damon in this raw hewn tale of 'hot rod hoods on the prowl for juke box honeys'.
"teenage wolfpack",from 1957,this german import starring a young james dean wanna-be named henry bookholt[actually, horst buchholz] was a tuff tale filmed in and around the same hamburg locations that the young beatles would be playing at within a few short years.
"teenage doll",from 1957,starred the delicious june kenney and fay spain[what a great name huh?] and was produced and directed by the infamous 'shlock film mogul' roger corman for probobly about 27$ and change, this is the reknowned 'j.d.' flick where a young hood asks another,'you got 32 teeth, wanna try for none?',this is undeniably an all time classic of the genre.
"reform school girl",from 1957,starred the luscious gloria castillo, yvette vickers and luanna anders as reform school gang chicks and has future 'kookie'[of televisions '77 sunset strip']edd byrnes as a tuff guy delinquint.
"hot rod rumble",from 1957,starred the thuggish richard hartunian and the delicious and leggy leigh snowden and was a story about drag racing, murder, teenage gangs and of course hot rods and rumbles.[the gangs club jackets look pretty cool].
"the delinquints",from 1957[actualy filmed largely in 1955],starring young 'billy jack' to-be tom laughlin, the 'poor mans brando' richard bakalyan, was filmed in kansas city and written, produced and directed by future acadamy award winner robert altman.
"dino",from 1957,starring a surly young sal mineo as the title character and the ever brooding richard bakalyan and was a tight little 'j.d.' flick.
"dragstrip riot",from 1958,starred the lovelies, connie stevens and yvonne lime[who once dated a young elvis],as well as gary clarke and gabe delutri as young hooligans,a great flick that includes street gangs, hotrod gangs, motorcycle gangs, gang fights, rock and roll and fay wray of king kong fame.
"high school confidential!",from 1958,starring russ tamblyn, michael landon, mamie van doren, jerry lee lewis[playing the title song on the back of a flatbed truck] and john drew barrymore jr.[drews recently deceased father] in a lurid tale of narcotics, gang rumbles, hotrod races and rock and roll.
"high school hellcats",from 1958,starring the lovelies yvonne lime and jana lund as female gang hoodlums on the prowl.
"hotrod gang",from 1958,starring gene vincent[yes that gene vincent!],john ashley,an unbilled eddie cochran and the sexy jody fair,in the story of hotrods, gangs, retribution and rock and roll.
"juvinile jungle",from 1958,starring richard bakalyan and corey allen,in a tale about a violent seemingly jet-propelled street gang.
"teenage thunder".from 1958,starring robert fuller and charles courtney as rival hotrod gang members,in this tale of hotrods, runaways, car accidents, drag races and the law.
"cry tough!",from 1959,starring the lotish john saxon and the vivacious linda cristal was a sequel of sorts to 'city across the river' in a story of street gangs, prison and young love.
"t-bird gang",from 1959,starring unknowns in a lurid tale about street gangs becoming gangsters and there eventual downfall, and by the way, there called the t-bird gang, because of the big bulky chrome bedecked cars they drive.
favorite gang movies of the 60's:
"this rebel breed',from 1960,starring the excellent rita moreno,in a story about street gangs on a rampage, with rock and roll, interracial love, crime sprees, narcotics and gang violence.
"high school caesar",from 1960,starred 'j.d.' stalwart john ashley,as well the sultry daria massey,in a story of hotrods, gangs, murder, rock and roll and retribution.
"key witness",from 1960,starring the murderous dennis hopper as the leader of a very small los angelas street gang, with joby baker, corey allen, johnny nash[the singer, better known for the song.'i can see clearly now'] and the luscious susan harrison as 'the gang' in a story of gang violence, murder, motorcycles, stolen cars and retribution.
"the young savages",from 1961,starring john davis chandler, neil nephew and stanley christian as the titles 'young savages',members of the italian/irish gang,'the thunderbirds',who kill a young porta rican blind boy in self proclaimed self defence....this is by far one of the best gang movies ever made, blowing out of the water the other so-called gang movie of 1961,the singing and dancing over produced tripe,'west side story' and also inspired the early 2000's gang opus 'deuces wild'....of course it did'nt hurt that it was also directed by the legandary john frankenheimer.
"teenage gang debs",from 1966[but actually filmed in 1963],starring unknowns in a lurid story of teen gang fights, murder, revenge, graphic sex[for the time that is] and romance.
"born wild",from 1968,starring tom nardini and the vamp like patty mccormack,in a story about gang violence, rape, revenge and the law.
"the mini-skirt mob",from 1968,starring the lovelies patty mccormack and sherry jackson as members of an all-girl bike gang, but they all ride little japanese bikes and wear mini-skirts and go-go boots,so though by definition it is a biker film,it is in actuality a street gang film.
favorite gang movies of the 70's:
"the cross and the switchblade",from 1970,starring eric estrada, dino defilippi, jackie giroux and jo-ann robinson as members of a tuff porta rican gang called 'the mau-mau's',who rumble with there black enemys 'the chaplains',on new york citys lower west side in violent altercations, based loosely on a true story of pennsilvania pastor david wilkinson, going to nyc. to help defend and hopefully win over with gods love,a group of violent street gang members, the porta rican 'mau-mau's',lead by estrada's 'nicky cruz',who are charged with killing another in the park.....although preachy and sometimes pretentious,it is a wothy 'gang' movie, with great rumble scenes and an actual charasmatic lead by eric estrada.
"the lords of flatbush",from 1974,starring a young sylvester stallonne, perry king, henry winkler and the late paul mace, these four are 'the gang'set in 1957,donning black leather jackets, engineer boots, dungarees, king being the only one who has a motorcycle, they ae esentially greasers who hang out, shoot pool, chase girls, steal cars, harmonize do-wop at the candy store, bust a few heads....they are all in all pretty harmless, but the movie was shot on 16mm film and then blown up to 33m film for national distribution so it has a really grainy home movie look to it that makes it seam pretty authentic looking and there 'lords' jackets are so cool, exspecially henry winkler's 'butchey' character's,check out the art florish's on back next time you watch it.
"switchblade sisters",from 1976,starred the lovelies robbie lee and joanne nail[great name huh?] as lace and maggie respectively, with a tuff chick named 'patch',the guy gang was called 'the daggers' and the girls were called 'the dagger debs',but break from the guys 'wimpiness' and rename themselves,'the jezabels',this movie is 70's exploitation at its raunchy finest, highly recomended.
"the wanderers",from 1979,starring ken wahl, john friedrich, tony ganios and jim youngs as the main members of 'the gang'is set in 1963,it also co-starred erland van lidthe dejaude as the 400 pound 6 foot 6 leader 'terror' of 'the fordham baldies',linda manz as 'pee-wee',the dimunitive girlfriend of terror and head of 'the baldies'ladies auxcilary[sp?],toni kalem and karen allen as 'wanderers' girlfriends.it was a great urban tale of street gangs, with names like,'the wongs','the pips','the cavaliers','the exacutioners','the pharoes','the del bombers','the mau-mau's' and 'the ducky boys'.....an excellent film, one of my all time favorites and damn, dont those 'wanderers' gold and purple satin jackets look slick!!
"the warriors",from 1979,starring michael beck as the leader of 'the gang',this movie set in a surreal nightmarish new york city, had gangs with colorful names such as,'the baseball furies','the grammercy riffs','the lizzies','the turbull a.c.'s','the orphans','the electric eliminators' and 'the union sqaure punks',to name but a few,the violence of this gang movie was stylized and surpisingly non bloody for the most part, yet either way it was one of the best gang movies ever made.
"over the edge",from 1979,starred young matt dillon in his first role, michael kramer, tom fergus, pamela ludwig and vincent spano as members of 'the gang',this movie was basicly a 70's updating of the 'rebel without a cause' storyline, with punk rock and heavy metal music added, about a story of bored subarbanites going on a rampage and its done exstremely well.
"walk proud" starring robby benson, trinadad silva and pepe serna,"boulavard nights" starring richard yniugez and danny delapaz,"sunnyside" starring joey travolta and michael tucci,"boardwalk" and "defiance" starring jan-michael vincent, danny aiello and theresa saldana were also released in 1979 as part of the spate of gang movies coming out that year.
favorite gang movies of the 80's:
"crazy times",from 1981,its really hard to find this tv movie nowadays, but it stars three up and coming stars of the period, michael pare, david caruso and ray liotta, its set in queens in 1955 and features a surly greasey street gang, called'the deacons',with really slick black satin jackets.
"the outsiders",from 1983,starring matt dillon,c.thomas howell, tom cruise, ralph macchio, emilio estavez, patrick swayze as 'the greasers',fighting an on going war with there loathed enemys 'the soc's',with the always delicious diane lane as a soc,who is a greaser supporter of sorts.this movie is one of my all time favorites[the director, francis ford coppolla,is supposed to be releasing a directors cut, with over a half hour of added scenes put back in the movie,on dvd soon].
"rumblefish",also from 1983,starring matt dillon,mickey rourke,vincent spano,christopher penn,nicholas cage,diane lane and laurence fishburne,in this awesome black & white film about gang violence,teen love,brotherly worship,murder,alcoholism and motorcycles....this movie is stunning.
"streets of fire",from 1984,starring michael pare as soldier of fortune'tom cody',willem dafoe [as 'raven shadduck',the leader of 'the bombers'],bill paxton[as a guy named clyde, who's pompadore is so tall he needs a building permit to comb his hair],lee ving[of the punk band,FEAR,as 'greer' the second in command of 'the bombers'],diane lane as the lovely herione 'ellen aim',the rockabilly band the blasters, deborah van valkenburg[she was 'mercy' in 'the warriors',also made by walter hill],amy madigan as the tough gun toting mechanic for hire 'mccoy' and a cast of hundreds,in this weird kinda movie,i mean is it the past,is it the future or is another planet entirelly?...either way it is a great stylized gang movie, with great music, great cars and motorcycles, sexy chicks[check out the stripper in fishnet at 'the torchie's' club scene, its marin jahan, the body double who actualy did all the dancing for jennifer beals in 1983's 'flashdance'],great fight scenes[the fight with sledge hammers is killer] and just a killer atmosphere....i love this movie.....long live the bombers!!!
"china girl",from 1987,starring unknowns, was a really good story about chinese gangs versus italian gangs,on the borders of chinatown and little italy in new york city, its basicly a reworking of 'west side story',without the silly and annoying singing and dancing and its quite gritty at times.
"crybaby",from 1990 starring johnny depp as wade'crybaby'walker, traci lords as 'wanda the bod',ricki lake as 'pepper' walker, darren burrows as 'milton hackett',kim maguire as'hatchetface' and iggy pop as 'uncle belvedere' play the members of 'the gang',though not exactly a gang movie per say,it is set in south baltimore in 1954 and the gang wears black leather jackets, engineer boots, rolled cuff blue dungarees and has greasey hair cuts, but they ar'nt in a named gang, there just greaser pals[here called 'drapes',due to the drape cut of their clothes],who are in a rockabilly band called 'the crybabies' and there at constant war with there loathed enemys 'the squares'[shades of 'the outsiders'here]....it does have singing and dancing, but since its made shlock guru john waters, its kinda cool, plus it has a killer, though not exactly accurate for the time period, soundtrack.
and yes,i love 2002 "deuces wild",very much and also 1979's 'zoot suit',starring edward james olmos, this gang picture was about the zoot suit riots of 1942 and a murder....ya just gotta love those pachuco's.
all ten of the 94/95 'rebel highway' series entries that included,'motorcycle gang','shake, rattle & rock','runaway daughters','roadracers'.'jailbreakers','confessions of a sorority girl','the cool and the crazy,'reform school girl','girls in prison','dragstrip girl',the short lived tv series of 'the outsiders' and all the sleazy 60's biker movies, because what are bikers, but 'juvinile delinquints' who grew up and became mobile away from there turf.
i hope this really really really long list helps, greasilly yours, jeff dice,a.k.a. 'the surly greaser'.
p.s.
i really hated the spate of late 80's/90's,'gang banger' movies, like
'new jack city','menace ll society','juice'
'gang related','boyz n the hood','colors',etc....the only ones i liked being,'mi vida loca','hangin' with the homeboys','american me' and 'blood in,blood out:bound by honor'.

reply

OK I also hate (most of) the spate of 90s gangbanger movies, BUT don't lump Boyz n the Hood with the rest. Boyz was the groundbreaker of the genre and is a great American classic. In fact I would go so far as to say Boyz is the Great American Tragedy of the 90s!

I once read that in a true "Tragedy" in the Greek sense you shouldn't cry at the end -- the end is inevitable -- you would cry at the beginning of the story because you can see the inevitability. Funny, I never understood that until Boyz n the Hood: I cried at the beginning when little children looked across the police tape of a murder scene and at the end of the movie I was just numbed by the tragedy.

reply

Your list was great but come on Juice was good, Menace II Society is great. I agree with the rest. I think Boyz n the Hood is a bit overrated the only things I liked about it were Ice Cube and Laurence Fishburn performances and everything that happened after Ricky was killed.
