Mom's Reaction to Dawn's Beaten-Up Friend

One of the scenes (amoung many others) that REALLY made me want to smack the mother across the mouth (so that she bled) was when the daughter came in and frantically told her mother that her best (actually ONLY) friend had been beaten up (BLOODY and UNCONCIOUSNESS) by her friend's mother's biker boyfriend. And what does her mother say? NOT "Oh my God! That POOR girl!" NOT "That's awfull!". NO! Instead she says, "What kind of a FRIEND is this?" Dawn SHOULD have gotten angry and said, "I'll tell you what kind of a FRIEND she is! She's the kind of FRIEND who did not DESERVE to be beaten up by her mother's boyfriend! THAT's what kind of a FRIEND she is!" How DARE the mother pass judgement of that poor girl. GEEZ! HELLO?!?!?! The girl could have DIED or suffered BRAIN DAMAGE! The she REFUSED to drive her daughter to the hospital to visit her friend and she also forbade her daugter to have any feelings about it! Meaning that she wouldn't even let her daughter to have an outlet for her stress, even if it meant that she WOULDN'T be CUTTING HERSELF!

I also wanted to punch the mother- the best thing she could have done was to take her daughter to see her friend- it's what she needed. In a way, I think it could be said that it was the mother's fault that the daughter ended up cutting her stomach. I just couldn't stand the mother through the whole movie- she irritated the bejeezus outta me.

yea the mom was a tremendous *beep* but when she said "what kind of a friend id is?" I couldn't help but wonder if maybe it was because she thought they were lesbians and she didn't want her daughter to be like that

reply

Oh yeah I thought of that too... It's hard to know. I think she just said it because she was a self-centered cow and I think subconciously maybe she wanted to punish Dawn for 'ruining her reputation'.

we have to remember that the mother never dealt with the fact that she had an abusive mother and she was blamed for her sister's death! She WANTED to be a good mom but in reality she really didn't know how! She grew up BELIEVING that everything was about her.

The impression I got from her reaction was that she considered Dawn's friend's family a family of "BAD PEOPLE", the kind of people that "good people" like the Cottrel's should not mix with, and that was why she wanted to keep Dawn away.

Some people do think along these, and given the mother's concern over her own reputation and the reputation of her daughter, it seems that Dawn's mother was this kind of person.

Both of Dawn's parents were selfish in this movie for whatever reason. Both her mom and dad thought only of themselves, not wanting to be blamed for Dawn's actions. When the talk of sexual abuse came up, the father said, " I never touched her, not inappropriately or anything." Then when Dawn asked to see the therapist, rather than focus on her, her father says, "Make sure you tell them I never touched you."

The mom, when she spoke to Dawn about her sister's death, it went from sharing something painful with her daughter to "I won't be blamed for what you're doing." The mom understandably never dealt with her own pain and guilt, so this is perhaps why she couldn't deal with her daughter's pain. But what's the dad's excuse? The dad, in the entire movie, he was very dismissive of the daughter, almost like she didn't exist. When Dawn said, "Goodnight Daddy" he absently said, "goodnight honey", never once taking his eyes off the Tv. Then we find out that he can't really face what's happening to his daughter, b/c he hasn't faced what he's holding in about his wife.

I think the entire family needed to see a therapist.

The mom is really dumb1 If she did that to me it would have just made me want to cut more!

I see dead people

that one pissed me off too but the one that mostly pissed me off was when her mom intentionally went and told one of her friends who has a kid at dawn's school about her cutting. than she keeps saying "You don't care what I think!" "am I supposed to keep this all bottled up?" its like thats what she's expecting dawn to do because it seems to me she's tried talking to her mom but her mom is too wrapped up in herself to care what her daughter thinks or feels...I think it was really *beep* she told someone about it and than treated it like "oh ho hum who cares maybe peer pressure will stop you!" -_-
