How realistic was Dawn as a cutter?

Do real cutters go cutting right after they experience stress?
Do they get all exited when doing so?
Does cutting really give that huge tripping effect like Dawn seems to experience? She was like totally off the world right after the burning....but I can't believe endorphines are as strong as valium.

I'm so not buying the portrayal in this movie unless people with experience proof otherwise.

I wish I had orgasms when I was self-harming.

Seriously.

It's hard enough having them already.

While endorphins are released--Dawn acted like she had five Valium and a Vicodin.

reply

normally yes...any feelings they cant handle or no longer want they will normally tryu to relieve themselves as soon as possible

as for getting excited i doing it i dont think so

yes cutting can get you in a "huge tripping effect"...i think Dawn's was a little over the tope thought..i dont think they get that big

the number one thing i found unrealistic was the amount of blood she lost...i mean in every scene she seems to loose alot of blood and i dont know if i quite buy it...or that she tore her stomach up as much as they made it out to be with a razor in the medicine cabinet..but most importantly if you look at her "scars" to the amount of blood she lost it doesnt compare...at least to me!

reply

Dazzleledbylights, it's definitely possible for her to lose that much blood and more from what she did. Especially if the razor was previously unused.

Well, I'll answer your questions based on my own personal experience.

Do real cutters go cutting right after they experience stress?
--It's different for everyone, I'd imagine. For me, depending on where I am, I'll go somewhere solitary [such as my bedroom is at home or a bathroom in a public place such as school] and try and calm down. Usually I end up pulling at my hair and bunching up my fists and then when I feel a little better, I cut because I know the less angry I am, the less damage I'll do. But that's just me.

Do they get all excited when doing so?
--Some do, masochists, but personally, I don't. I do usually holdd my breath while I do it though... Which has nothing to do with this question....

Does cutting really give that huge tripping effect like Dawn seems to experience?
--Some do, actually, and endophines can act that strongly, but I don't think it's all too common. Personally, I just feel relaxed and calmer, better. Not like I'm tripping or anything.

I personally thought her portrayal wasn't as convincing, being there myself with the excited breathing, but the franticness in which she did it was. Hope I've helped.

it's different with each situation and person. sometimes it jsut gives you a little swing. other times, when it's really bad, you might flip out, or just lay there like a rock. it really just depends on the person. cutters cut ASAP after stress.

Do cutters really cut that deeply? I thought it was more of a scratching, enough to bleed but not gushing blood. Or is everyone different in that regard?

The ones that do it for attention generally do more of a "scratching." I started out that way, but by the time I was done, I got really nasty. I now have these hideous scar fields, one on my left upper arm, and one on my upper right thigh, from the really deep ones. It changes from person to person and even within individuals, it can change from week to week or month to month. It can even change from one event to another. Some things would get me to cut deeper than others.

reply

it depends reallly on the person. it varies from scratching to really deep- deep enough to need stitches.

reply

It depends. Some cutter just make scratched or shallow cuts, others cut very deep and neet stitches. Sometimes people cut too deep on accident, and sometimes they mean to... it all depends on the person and the situation.

reply

very realistic.

I thought her performance was terrible, and only enforced stigma around those who self harm. She seemed to get some kind of psychotic sexual pleasure out of cutting, and the way she spoke about it with the shrink... was just dumb. The scene where she does it in the mall and smears blood everywhere is something I can only imagine someone very disturbed doing, which as far as I can tell her character was not supposed to be, nor are most self harmers.

reply

i definitely agree with you there

With me,yes i do cut myself after experiencing stress but im sure it varies from person to person so im just speaking for me and my experience.

Do they get all exited when doing so?

I don't really get excited, i feel more relieved than anything.

Does cutting really give that huge tripping effect like Dawn seems to experience? She was like totally off the world right after the burning?

For me no i don't get that huge tripping effect like Dawn did.I feel relieved and more calm after i cut i think they went way over the top with Dawn's reaction after cutting herself.

One thing that bugged me though, which actually someone else already mentioned was the amount of blood that Dawn lost.It was too much, she didnt really cut herself deep enough to justify the amount of blood she was losing. That really bothered me through the entire movie,i still really love this movie though.

It varies between person. I personaly wait to i'm alone to even pick up something sharp.

I do, but like i said it varies. Im kinda quiet and i just sit there taking deep breaths.

it was over-acted but some people feel that way.
