What's with the fear of light and the locking of doors?

Was there really any reasons for this or was it just the mother being crazy?

reply

Yes, the reasons were stated several times during the movie.

*******
- Whos the lady with the log?
- We call her the Log Lady

reply

They couldnt go in the light because they were sensitive to the light and would die grace clearly says this in the film

reply

Ya, you must have missed the beginning of the movie. When the three servants first arrive and Grace is taking them on the tour of the house, she introduces them to the kids and says they are photosensitive. It's some rare-but-real condition where exposure to light causes them to die. I think their throat swells up like in an allergic reaction and they suffocate.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. -Edison

reply

I understood her closing all the doors, but WHY did she locked them with a key.

reply

Because kids are dumb, she was keeping them safe from their own carelessness/curiosity. They couldn't go into the sunlight and hurt/kill themselves if the door was locked.

reply

Exactly. The kids would either forget that they have to be extra careful or they'll venture into the sunlight just out of curiosity...b/c that's just what kids do. They can't be expected to be fully obedient all the time, despite being relentlessly cautioned. I can't even begin to count the number of times I've repeatedly told kids to not do something and they'll just do it anyway.

reply

I understood it as that she knew things were going on in the house that she could not explain and did it to minimize the possibility of these strange things happening. She mentions that the piano plays by itself (which disturbs her), things happen in rooms with no one in them, doors opening, she hears noises, etc.

reply

She gives the instructions to the "new" servants before the bulk of the strange things happen. It's clear from the manner of her explanation that it isn't something new she just thought up, but a regimen that she's been following for some time, and has explained to servants before.

The answer, I think, is what has already been mentioned: to avoid accidental exposure of the children to sunlight.

Did you miss a lot of the film??

The children had Xeroderma Pigmentosum.

but i think it was a metaphor - as if their spiritual beliefs were 'in the dark', or they were not able to see the world beyond the confines of their beliefs. this is supported by the chambermaid: "you cant always believe what you read in books", and other cues from the script.

reply

They always lived in the dark, so no. And when the maid says they shouldn't worry about the sunlight it's because she knows the sunlight won't affect ghosts.

"The children had Xeroderma Pigmentosum. "

I think their ailment was more serious than that..

My point is, that the kids were DEAD (and yet alive without physical bodies), so they couldn't have had ANY kind of physical illness anymore - they couldn't have DIED from the light, because they were already dead!

So it wasn't really explained in the movie. Perhaps the kids never had such an ailment, but the mother started intuitively being scared of bringing them to the light (of truth / reincarnation / higher planes), for the fear of losing them or finding out the horrible truth about her own actions, and so on..

It's a bit silly movie though, because they were living on the physical plane (or they couldn't have manipulated the doors and teared up the papers and such), and yet they weren't (otherwise they wouldn't have been invisible to the people who did, and vice versa).

Or in any case, all this 'level' / 'dimension' stuff wasn't really explained or explored much in the movie - things just happened that were convenient for the script/plot, and that's that. Sigh.

I knew that the movie was going to have some kind of 'reality' twist, but I was very disappointed to find out what a lame, boring, clichéic and formulaic thing the supposed 'twist' was. I was hoping for something more daring, like the whole area being captured by Extraterrestrial Kids, who would then treat the people as their toys (like in a Twilight Zone episode), or some such thing.

But no, the stupid 6th Sense-'twist' all over again, aagh.

Really boring, pointless, and horrible (in many senses of the word) movie, that I wish I had never wasted my time on.. and which I can't ever see myself watching again - there's absolutely NO reason. This movie doesn't offer the viewer ANYTHING, especially compared to movies that actually do. Even "6th Sense" is more worth watching again than this crap. Everything is so gloomy, weird, and 'dark' and grey.. people are so ugly and odd, and the lighting.. well, it's a "modern movie", so what do I expect.

But I don't still understand why people seek horror, when the reality is horrible enough already. Why don't they instead just move to North Korea and make the horror of their lives complete?

Look at a movie such as The Others. It ends with us finding out Grace killed her children because she couldn't handle the stress. Because it has supernatural elements, we can deal with the horror of it. But take away the supernatural elements and it's no different than any of the things you see in the news. By adding the supernatural, it gives us something to distance ourselves from the horrors of reality. It's a coping mechanism.

I wish I never stopped to read this stupid, pointless, and boring old post. They kids in real life had the disease. Not knowing she is dead, she still thought they did (really big DUH) so she continued her routine, which according to the lore of ghosts, they don't know they are dead and so go about in old houses until someone comes along contacts them and gives them a clue and they go into the light. If you recall, when the servant clarified (brought her into the light) to her they were all dead and therefore the children could play in the light, well that ended her locking the doors because she now had a clue.

Now, yes, the original writer of the story or script could have conferred this particular diease because he or she meant it as a metophor for darkness and light. Since all of this apparently flew over your head and you were hoping for aliens (as cliche as all that is), next time why not watch something with a lot of guns and shoot 'em ups because it seems you would process those kinds of films better.

You seem to not understand A LOT of things so I'll be concise. DON'T WATCH ANY MOVIES EVER AGAIN because THEY ALL have the SAME story line than another.

Revenge, love, hate, destruction, invasion, death, etc, etc, etc.

Also, you don't understand why we like horror movies but not why we like action and war movies? You first need to get a clue and then stop complaining about things that make you seem dull witted.

And so you don't have any more doubts, I'll mention that at the beginning of the movie we're meant to believe that the kids are being haunted by a ghost named Victor but in reality Victor and his family were being haunted by them inadvertently. They didn't know they were (obviously) and only at certain times would the living and the dead coincide and "haunt each other."

reply

You weren't paying much attention, were you?

"You need people like me."

reply

The mother knew that her kids were dead (she killed them in life) and the addition of light might have moved their spirits on, as spiritualists believe about leading them into the light when 'healing' lost spirits?

The kids could be in the light at the end of the Movie because they were dead.
When they were alive they would die in the light but when they found out that they were dead they realised that they did not need to be afraid of the light anymore.

They thought they we're alive the whole time. And so did we before the twist came. I thought it was unique. Ghosts being haunted by the living :D

That was such a cool twist.
