Did Grace kill the children?

One of the things that has always bothered me about this film is how did Grace and the children die. I don't think it was ever explained. Was it murder/suicide? Or something else?

reply

It's explained at the end. She smothered and killed the kids with a pillow, then she shot herself in the forehead.

reply

Thank you. I guess I missed that somehow.

reply

Yeah. But it was predictable about Grace.

reply

But why did she kill them ?

reply

Because the Nazis were coming and they would have taken over the house and either threw them out or put them in a camp. Either way, the children would have died a horrible death from exposure to the light/sun and Grace would have been raped etc. She made the right decision.

reply

It wasn't the Nazis. Grace handled them just fine, never even letting one in the house. She went mad after her husband and servants abandoned the family, leaving her trapped at home because of the children's condition.

reply

Um, yeah. Grace never handled any Nazis. Because they hadn't gotten around to her house yet. But their arrival was imminent. And one has no option as to if they will let them into one's house. The servants left because the Nazis were coming. Her husband didn't abandon them. He died in the war. Watch again and pay closer attention.

reply

The Germans occupied the Channel Islands in 1940. The servants didn't leave until 5 years later. The husband was not required to go to war; he volunteered, abandoning his family.

reply

Again, watch again and pay closer attention.

reply

Grace went mad after she was completely abandoned and basically trapped in a miserable dark house.

reply

If you have netflix its worth a watch again. Grace says what happened at the end. Im watching it now myself

reply

You need to change your title and put a spoiler warning.

reply

No. This movie is from 2001. This is the internet movie database public forum for a 2001 movie. Expect spoilers or don't visit the page until you've watched the movie.

Doesn't matter how old or new the film is lol! Spoilers still apply! Geesh!

Except that even the mods here would tell you the same thing. If you don't want to see spoilers, you really shouldn't be poking around a discussion board until AFTER you watch the movie.

Exactly, you must be stupid if you want to read all about a movie before watching it, especially coming on IMDB. I try not to even read the basic plot so I can figure it all out myself!

reply

Okay.
I will.
Like I did,
when I posted.
I'm sorry to inform you that I had seen the film beforehand.

reply

Virtually any question is a spoiler, so why not caution yourself that imdb is going to spoil it for you?

reply

I came here and posted that after I watched the film, so no, I don't need caution and I was not spoiled.

reply

Not even. Like the other posters said, this is an IMDB message board for a movie that came out in 2001, nearly 15 years ago. You should expect spoilers here.

Once upon a time there was a magical place where it never rained. The end.

reply

I hope you don't mean me personally because I was not spoiled.

My post wasn't trying to be mean or imposing, but I'd hope, regardless of what IMDB mods say, people can still be courteous. I also did not realize the film was released so far back, so I understand this argument. And now I realize I could have been more courteous and maybe answered the OPs question too.

Are all of you saying you don't ever check IMDB before you watch a film to see if you want to watch it or not?

I think the OPs title just jarred me a bit because I had just seen the film and this is a pretty big spoil.

Despite all of this,
why the hell is my post still being responded to?

reply

Reading over my post, I could have been a bit more courteous as well, so I'm sorry about my response being a bit rude.

To answer your question, yes, sometimes I do check IMDB before I watch a movie, to see what people are saying about it, to see if it's any good or the kind of thing I wold like. However, (and I wish this wasn't true) I generally try to be careful, because I know that I could potentially run into spoilers, and sometimes, no matter how careful I try to be, I end up running into spoilers. It's happened often enough, even with movies I've seen so I don't care as much, that I kind of just expect to find spoilers here, especially on movies that are 5+ years old and TV shows that are currently still running.

Once upon a time there was a magical place where it never rained. The end.

reply

Oh, I wasn't talking about you being discourteous, but that I'd hope posters were a bit more courteous as to not spoil things in the thread titles (and then me being discourteous). Some people do it, some people don't, some of us see it as being respectful, others don't care or see no reason for it because just like its said, it's something to expect. But just because it should be expected, doesn't mean it should be. *shrugs* Just two kinds of people...

It could have been titled just as easily as "About the ending.." or "The Plot Twist", etc.

The currentness of the topic does change the perspective though, I guess?
I swear Netflix said this came out 2011, and I watched it because I thought it was recent, but yes, 2001 is super DUPER long ago. But still, if I hadn't seen it and clicked on the board, yeah, I'd be immediately screwed.

Current TV shows' imdb boards definitely have the spoiler warning/ no spoiler warning threads going on. You just gotta be real lucky with timing there. or not go...but even then there's prediction articles and stuff like that for later episodes/ shootings. gaaaah

They reference how Grace went "mad" throughout the film. When Grace tries to strangle Anne while in the dress is a foreshadow as well. The scene where you see Victor's family and the Psychic is where it's all explained

reply

She murdered the children, then committed suicide.
