Anyone ever been to Gein's hometown of Plainfield, WI?

I haven't, but I've heard that emotions still run high there about the Ed Gein case. I also know that people still go there out of curiosity, and I wonder what the atmosphere in the town is because of that.

i live just a few hours away. i drive by there all the time (hell, i gas up at the gas station just off the interstate there). it's a normal, quaint, small town.

YES I HAVE BEEN THERE QUITE OFTEN. I GO TO VISIT MY FAMILY MEMBERS THERE AT "SPIRIT LAND". I HAVE FOLLOWED AND RESEARCHED THE HISTORY QUITE A BIT. MY FAMILY IS FROM PLAINFIELD AND BEFORE MY FATHER PAST AWAY HE TOLD ME OF MARY HOGAN (TUG-BOAT-ANNIE) AND BERNICE, AS WELL AS GIVING ME A SPACE IN THE FAMILY PLOT AT SPIRIT LAND WHERE I PLAN TO END UP SOME DAY. I MUST SAY THAT OVER THE YEARS I THINK THAT SOME OF THE FACTS HAVE BECOME MORE FICTION THAN FACT AS MOST DO IN CASES SUCH AS THIS. EVEN STORIES HANDED DOWN FROM FAMILY MEMBERS SEEM TO GET CLOUDED A BIT ONCE IN A WHILE. I GUESS YOUR FREE TO BELIEVE WHAT YOU READ AND HEAR. AS FOR ME I CHOOSE TO KEEP PLAINFIELD THE SMALL QUITE TOWN IT ONCE WAS AND LET "SLEEPING DOGS LIE".

Werner Herzog and Erroll Morris origionally went there to make a film about ed gein, (which fell through) and he was so moved by the strangeness of the town that he later used Plainsfeild as a setting for most of "Stroyzeck" with Bruno S. He even used the two auto mechanics that worked on his car there as actors.

i drive by it on my way to milwaukee.

my grandma told me she and her friend hitch hiked around wisconsin when they were younger, and they ended up in plainfield one night. she said she saw a lantern in the back of the cemetary, and she and her friend thought it was ed gein.

i don't know if that's true or not, though. maybe she just told me that so i would be safe when i travel.

I live very close to Plainfield and actually pass through there about once a week. I've seen the old Hardware store where Bernice Worden was killed. It is true about Gein's car, but I'm not sure where it is located at this point in time.

Emotions run extremely high there. Plainfield is a small town and doesn't want to be known because of Gein. A ridiculous drunk uncle of mine once ordered a "Gein burger" in a local bar. He was thrown out. Also, Plainfield has a Bean fest every summer and it is common for the sign to be changed to "Gein fest."

I have been there a good number of times, and have bought stuff at the hardware store (I believe it is now a True Value). I would never describe Plainfield as a creepy town--if you had never heard of Ed Gein, you wouldn't think there was anything even slightly unusual about the town.

When I was young, there was an old guy in my church that grew up with Ed in Coon Valley. I didn't know this until he saw me reading the Gein book in junior high, and he told me about it. Eeeewwwwwwwww.

I also was in college at Marquette in Milwaukee when Dahmer was on trial--his place was about 7 blocks from mine. Eeeewwwwwwwwww again. I think people should pay me to not live near them.

I live near Plainfield, and its is really just a normal city. Me and my friends go there once and a while if we know someone who has never been there. We take them to his grave and they get pretty freaked out...its a pretty normal thing around here and most people joke about it a lot...nothing too serious to me anyways. My grandmother lived kiddycorner from his house and often played in his yard when he was there. creepy...once he invited her mother, my great grand mother over for venison...(in case you havn't realized it he never once killed a deer)

I've been to Plainfield 5-7 times (I live in Green Bay)

I've gotten all the original court papers and newspapers photocopied and I went to the murdersites, the roller rink and his old house site.

His mother's tombstone was gone last time I went there. His has been gone for a few years, and several mock gravestones (including one made of a cow jaw bone that I made) have been left as replacements.

Me and my friends used a Ouija board while sitting on his grave. While we were trying to contact him, the somewhat heavy flower pot on his grave head fell over freaking us out pretty well.

email me at [email protected] if you want to learn more / see the pictures.

What's the address? A couple of friends and I want to take a little road trip up there before it gets sold, and who knows what happens to it afterwards.

Type "The World of Ed gein" in Google and go to that Web site. That should give you all the info you need

yeah... i have some land not too far up the road from the old gein farm... very secluded... not much to see anymore... just trees and potato fields... i would suggest you stay away from the land... i got in some trouble for trespassing there a few years back... it was a real mess...

where is the gein farmland?----off some highway or what?

reply

The Gein farmland is a few miles outside of Plainfield in a decently isolated area. It's back a good distance from any well traveled roads; the area itself is a series of old gravel roads that are almost like a maze to those without directions. The property is on Archer road and is surrounded by large gnarled trees and then a bit of wide open field that ends near a woods. The property is very secluded and blocked out from the rest of the world. You stand on it and it's like that farmland is the only place in the world.

EWWWWWWWW!!!!!

Why must close-minded people always open their mouths?

My family grew up in Wautoma, Wi which is about 15 miles from Plainfield. Both my Dad and Mom said they went deer hunting in Plainfield in the morning sometime in Nov of 1957 and had no luck. They drove back into town after noon and had a beer at the local bar. They met a real friendly guy named Ed who told them he could show them a place where deer hide behind his farm. Ed asked them to follow him to his farm and he would show them. My mom said she suddenly, for some reason, got sick and they decided to go home instead. Two weeks later my dad saw Ed Gein's picture in the Wautoma paper with an article of his arrest and Dad said he almost had a heart attack! My mom said if she hadn't gotten sick, I might not have been born! I think God had a hand in her getting sick!

I use to go to camp in Wild Rose Wisconsin south of Plainfiled, and I remeber on of the guys talking about Ed Gein and the murders, and being kind of creeped out trying to sleep in the cabin.
